Jay Roth Appointed President of NewTek’s 3D Graphics Division

NewTek Inc. has named Jay Roth president of the 3D graphics division of the company. Roth, co-founder and former CEO of Electric Image Inc., has 25 years experience in the 3D visual effects and graphics industry. In his new role Roth will oversee the expansion of the 3D product line, the advancement of technical innovation in LightWave 3D, along with sales and marketing efforts relating to NewTeks 3D graphics offerings.

VES-VFX Festival Slated for June 25-26 at Aero Theatre

The 2005 VES-VFX Festival has been set for June 24 26, 2005 at the newly restored Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, California, it was announced by Visual Effects Society (VES) exec director, Eric Roth.

The festival will include a cocktail party and silent auction featuring items of visual effects significance up for bid to raise money for the eight-year-old non-profit organization. Panels, special screenings and other events are in the planning phase and a full line-up of activities is expected to be announced by May 1.

VES Expands ‘Problem Solving’ Speaker Series

The Visual Effects Society (VES) has added Area 51 supervisor Glenn Campbell (CHILDREN OF DUNE, GARDEN STATE) and supervisor/matte artist Rocco Gioffre (THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, BLADE RUNNER) to its VFX Spring Speaker Series devoted to Behind the Scenes: Problem-Solving in Visual Effects.

Topics will be free flowing and interactive, with a focus on problem solving.

Switch VFX Celebrates One-Year Anniversary

Toronto-based Switch VFX, a visual effects studio specializing in photorealistic effects and CG character creation for feature films and television, marked its first anniversary in February. Switch VFX recently completed visual effects work on the Fox/Sci Fi Channel series pilot ANONYMOUS REX and on the GalaFilm Prods. TV movie TRIPPING THE WIRE, as well as title design for the CBC miniseries WHISKEY ECHO.

Gnomon Workshop Releases Eight New DVDs

The Gnomon Workshop adds to its digital and analog collections this month with eight new titles covering visual storytelling, character design, environment creation and industrial design. Joining the Digital library, the Gnomon Workshop welcomes art director Aaron Sims with his new two-DVD collection on Creature Design. These titles reveal the artist's use of Adobe Photoshop, XSI, DeepPaint3D and ZBrush. Sims, an art director at Stan Winston studios, worked for years designing creature effects make-up with Rick Baker before perfecting his digital skills.

It was SPIDER-MAN 2 and THE AVIATOR running neck and neck for the most awards, taking three each, at the 3rd Annual VES Awards Wednesday night, Feb. 16, 2005, but it was HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN that pulled out with the top honor for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture at a black-tie gala at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.

VES Selects SynCast to Deliver Nominated Material

SyncCast has been selected by the Visual Effects Society (VES) to host and stream the nominated content for voting by its members of the material from many of the box office hits of 2004.

For the first time in the VES Awards' history, final viewing and voting will take place online via the VES Website from Jan. 31 to Feb. 12. This groundbreaking method will allow VES members worldwide to view encrypted clips of the nominees' work and vote in a safe and secure online environment. Only VES members may vote and a special password is required to view and vote online.

VES Doles Out Awards Nods

The Visual Effects Society (VES) announced its nominees for the 3rd Annual VES Awards recognizing outstanding visual effects in 19 categories of film, television, commercials, music videos and games. Nominees were chosen by a panel of more than 60 visual effects professionals (all VES members) that viewed hundreds of entry submissions during an all-day event at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center over the weekend.

Zemeckis to Receive VES Lifetime Achievement Award

The Visual Effects Society will honor Robert Zemeckis (THE POLAR EXPRESS) with its second Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2005 VES Awards ceremony, to be held Feb. 16 at the Hollywood Palladium. George Lucas, chairman, VES Awards Honorary Committee, was the first recipient this year.
