Lord of the Rings King of 2004 VES Awards

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING took home four honors, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Motion Picture, at the second annual VES Awards held last night at a black-tie gala at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award to filmmaker George Lucas by Academy Award-winning director James Cameron. SMALLVILLE had two big wins as did PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL and THE MATRIX RELOADED.

The Visual Effects Society (VES) presents the 2004 VES Awards, a celebration of the best in visual effects. Participants can submit their entry forms for any one of the 23 categories through the VES Awards online submission site at www.vesawards.com. The 2nd annual event will be held on February 18, 2003 at the Hollywood Palladium. The deadline for submission is December 1, 2003. For the first time, a special Lifetime Achievement Award will be given.

Stargate Digital Launches Visual Effects Facility at London's Pinewood Studios

Stargate Digital, the visual effects studio based in Pasadena, Californa, has opened a new facility, Stargate Digital UK, at London's historic Pinewood Studios.

The new high-speed, deep storage digital facility is modeled after Stargate's growing and groundbreaking Los Angeles and Vancouver studios. All three studios will be linked via a state-of-the art high-speed, high-resolution digital network and will be able to quickly and efficiently work on projects and pool talent.

TeamWorks Digital Cranks Up the 'Torque'

TeamWorks Digital recently completed work on Warner Bros.' TORQUE, the hyper-real motorcycle racing film that opens Jan. 16. "TORQUE is a project that enabled us to provide constant input to the visual effects of the show," says TeamWorks Digital owner David Allen. "We contributed in such a way that translated the director's unique style and vision to the screen." TORQUE is directed by music video honcho Joseph Kahn, making his first feature film debut.

Nominees for 2004 VES Awards Announced

The Visual Effects Society (VES) has announced the nominations for its 2004 VES Awards.

VES membership viewing of the nominees and voting will take place on Feb. 7. Winners will be announced at the second annual VES Awards event on Feb.18 at the Hollywood Palladium. The evening will be highlighted by the presentation of the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award to George Lucas. Making the presentation will be Academy Award-winning director James Cameron.

LA SIGGRAPH Hosts Visual Effects of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Los Angeles ACM SIGGRAPH and Apple Computer are hosting an event presented by Weta Digital detailing the visual effects of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. The visual effects artists and producers of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING will guide guests through the imposing challenge of creating 1700+ visual effects shots. Speakers will include Jim Rygiel, vfx supervisor; Dean Wright, vfx producer; and Alex Funke, miniatures director of photography. Social hour will begin at 6:30 pm with the presentation starting at 7:30 pm.

Cameron to Present Lifetime Achievement Award to George Lucas at VES Awards

Academy Award-winning director James Cameron will present the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the Visual Effects Society (VES) to George Lucas at the 2004 VES Awards ceremony.

Cameron, acclaimed director of such visual effects powerhouses as TITANIC, ALIENS, THE ABYSS and the first two films of the TERMINATOR trilogy, will be a featured presenter at the second annual VES awards event which will be held at the Hollywood Palladium on Feb. 18, 2004.

3D Festival Early Bird Registrations Open

Early bird registrations and pricing are now available online for 3D Festival 2004 (www.3dfestival.com), which will be held May 3-6 at Bella Center, Copenhagen. The festival features a noteworthy line up of showcases, master classes, workshops and speakers. Early Bird pricing is available through April 4.

Jeff Ross On Board at Eden FX

VFX industry veteran Jeff Ross has joined Hollywood-based visual effects shop Eden FX, in the newly created position of evp.

Ross has built an extensive career guiding, managing and overseeing the growth of numerous successful, high-end post-production companies. For the past two years, he served as evp/coo of Sunset Digital, a high definition facility specializing in feature film mastering, digital restoration, linear and non-linear editing and DVD compression and authoring.

Entity FX Adds Greer

Visual effects producer Leighton Greer has joined the staff of Entity FX in Santa Monica, California. Previously she was visual effects producer at A52 where she produced spots for Nike, BMW, Nissan, Toyota, Cadillac, Volvo and Sony PlayStation. Prior to A52, Greer worked at Rhythm & Hues, Pinnacle Studios and Pacific Ocean Post.

Greer recently produced the award-winning Nike MOVE, directed by Jake Scott of RSA and Sony PlayStations SIGNS, directed by Dante Ariola of MJZ.

Atkin Says its Time to Move On From VES

Tom Atkin told VFXWorld that he will be stepping down as founding exec director of the Visual Effects Society (VES) because he's come to the realization that "the goal is accomplished and there is nothing more that I can do at this level. Now that I've built this organization, it's time to turn it over to the membership to dictate future policies, goals and business plans."

Exec Director Atkin to Leave VES

Tom Atkin has decided to step aside as founding exec director of the Visual Effects Society (VES) at the end of his current contract on July 31, 2004. Atkin said he is returning to his entrepreneurial roots. He founded VES in 1993 and helped guide its growth to its current 900 global members, nine festivals worldwide and an annual awards show. The VES will begin the search for a successor. "I have been so honored to be a part of the Visual Effects Society for the past 10 years," Atkin said. "My passion for this organization is equivalent to the child I never had.

Get Taken, Spielberg-Style, on DVD

The Emmy Award-winning TAKEN, produced by DreamWorks Television and exec produced by Steven Spielberg, was Sci Fi Channel's highest rated program ever. The 10-part miniseries comes to DVD Oct. 21, 2003 in a lavish five-disc set (DreamWorks Home Entertainment, $89.95). Spanning 50 years of habitual alien abductions among three American families, TAKEN expands on many of the themes Spielberg first introduced in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, obviously with a stronger emphasis on family.

R!OT Manhattan Ups McCullough to Visual Effects Supervisor

R!OT Manhattan has promoted Tom McCullough to visual effects supervisor. In his new role, McCullough will design, budget and oversee visual effects work for commercials, episodic television and broadcast graphics. He will also provide on-set visual effects supervision. McCullough will retain his post as senior inferno artist and will remain involved in hands-on visual effects production. A multi-talented artist, McCullough is also skilled in 3D animation.

The Simpsons and Firefly Win Animation and VFX Primetime Emmys

THE SIMPSONS and FIREFLY were the big Emmy winners for animation and visual effects, respectively, at The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences 2002-2003 Creative Arts Primetime Emmys for programs and individual achievements at the 55th Annual Emmy Awards presentation September 13, 2003, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

A Core VFX DVD

THE CORE, the high-tech sci-fi thriller starring Aaron Eckhart and Hilary Swank about a team of geophysicists that travel to the earth's core to save the planet, bores its way to DVD on Sept. 9, 2003 (Paramount Home Entertainment, $29.99). There are plenty of digital vfx disasters to dazzle the eye, courtesy of Frantic Films, CREO, Fantasy II Film Effects and Rising Sun Pictures, and the work was recently highlighted at VES 2003: A Festival of Visual Effects.
