EM.TV Acquires TV/Home Entertainment rights to Zoé Kézako

EM.TV AG has secured exclusive distribution rights for free-TV, pay-TV and home entertainment to the 3D-animated series ZOÉ KÉZAKO from French production studio Sparkling. The German broadcast rights to the program were subsequently licensed to ZDF, which will premiere the series on KI.KA, the childrens channel owned jointly by German public broadcasters ZDF and ARD. ZOÉ KÉZAKO will start screening on Dec. 8, 2004. In the home entertainment sector, Universal Family Ent.

Award-winning writer/producer Phil Lollar has become director of development for Renegade Animation. Lollar will develop episodic television, feature film, DVD and other entertainment projects for the animation studio. Renegade currently produces the Cartoon Network series HI HI PUFFY AMI YUMI debuting this fall.

Simpsons to Continue Until 2009

Matt Groening said he plans to continue THE SIMPSONS for another five years, reports THE SUN. This would make the series tie with GUNSMOKE as the longest running series in U.S. primetime history. THE SIMPSONS is already the longest running sitcom ever in the U.S.

Groening said: "I'd love to get to 365 episodes, so there's one for every day of the year with no repeats."

However, to reach Groenings goal, the actors would have to extend their contract for an additional year.

Troy Scribe To Write Wolverine Spinoff

20th Century Fox has tapped TROY screenwriter David Benioff to write the X-MEN spinoff, WOLVERINE, reports VARIETY. Fox hopes to have Hugh Jackman reprise his role as the superhero. The assignment will net Benioff seven figures. The writer pitch the idea to 20th Century Fox president Hutch Parker and svp Alex Young, who'll oversee the project.

Korean Ghost To Get American Remake

Dimension Films has acquired the remake rights to the Korean horror film RYEONG (THE GHOST) from Showbox, reports HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Vertigo Ent.'s Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Sonny Mallhi will produce. The original Tae-Kyeong Kim-directed film followed the mystery of amnesic teenage girl who discovers that she is somehow connected to a murderous ghost who is killing people one by one. Dimension co-presidents Andrew Rona and Brad Weston, and Dan Levine, svp production and development, will oversee the project. Vertigo Ent.

Shark Tale Takes a Big Box Office Bite

DreamWorks got the big opening it was seeking from the 3D-animated SHARK TALE, considering the timing of its IPO to spin off the animation division, but the actual gross of $47.6M was $2M less than the early estimate.

Still, while not quite the best October opening ever, SHARK TALE delivered the goods and won the box office derby for the weekend ended Oct. 3, 2004, far surpassing the other notable debut, Buena Vistas LADDER 49, which came in second with $22M.

Cruise Gets Costars For War of the Worlds

Tim Robbins, Miranda Otto and Dakota Fanning are all in talks to co-star along with Tom Cruise in Steven Spielbergs big budget rendition of H.G. Wells WAR OF THE WORLD, reports HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Robbins would play astronomer Ogilvy while Otto and Fanning would plays Cruises wife and daughter respectively. The film will be a super fast production due to Paramounts desire to have this film be its tentpole for next summer after MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 was pushed back a year.

John Woo Takes on He-Man

Fox 2000 has hired John Woo to direct HE-MAN, a live-action flick based on Mattel's MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE toy line, reports VARIETY. Adam Rifkin will write the screenplay. Woo will also produce the film with Terence Chang through their Lion Rock Prods. Fox 2000 president Elizabeth Gabler and director of production Rodney Farrell will Shepard the project. The original story follows half Earthling/half Eternian Prince Adam, who receives the superpowers of Castle Grayskull when he turns 18 in an effort to defend his home world from the evil plans of Skeletor.

More MegaMan To Come To Kids’ WB!

Kids' WB! and ShoPro Ent. are teaming up for the third season of MEGAMAN NT WARRIOR: AXESS, for the 2004-05 season. The network has ordered 30 never-before-seen episodes of the Japanese animated series that will begin airing in spring 2005. The third season order brings the total commitment of the series to 80 episodes.

Silverwing Series Repackaged Into Movie Trilogy

Bardel Ent. has repackaged its SILVERWING series into a movie trilogy created for both broadcast and DVD/VHS distribution worldwide. Under the creative direction of veteran producer Chris Henderson, the 13x22 series has been edited into three 72-minute movies with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Henderson recently completed Scholastic Ent.s theatrically released feature film CLIFFORDS REALLY BIG MOVIE and also worked on Disneys RETURN TO NEVER LAND.

Cartoon Net To Host Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi Concerts

Cartoon Network will be hosting a series of concerts to promote its newest original animated series--HI HI PUFFY AMIYUMI, premiering Nov. 19 at 7:30 pm. The show is based on the real-life Japanese pop-rock band, PUFFY, which features lead-vocalists Ami and Yumi. PUFFY is an extremely popular band in Asia and is beginning to make a big splash here in the U.S.
