Neon Genesis Evangelion Tops 25 Anime of All Time List

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION topped the NEWTYPE USA readers list of top anime of all time. The publication ran a three-month open ballot to celebrate its second year of publication.

Coming in at No. 2 with more than 11,700 votes cast was COWBOY BEBOP, a perennial favorite that combines Western themes with sci-fi motifs and jazzy music. And the third favorite anime of all time: INUYASHA, the long-running adventure starring a modern schoolgirl and a feudal half-demon dog boy. Rounding out the top five are RUROUNI KENSHIN and TRIGUN.

Appleseed Coming to American Theaters

Geneon Ent. will be releasing the highly anticipated anime feature APPLESEED to the theaters in the U.S. Opening Jan. 14, 2005, in select cities, the film is based on the manga story by Masamune Shirow (GHOST IN THE SHELL) and directed by Shinji Aramaki (BUBBLEGUM CRISIS). APPLESEED features a groundbreaking animation style, "3D Live Anime," utilizing motion capture animation techniques. The film was released theatrically in Japan earlier this year.

Van Helsing Scares Up $65 Million in Home Ent. Debut

Universal Studios Home Ent. announced that VAN HELSING scared up sales of more than four million combined DVD and VHS units in the first six days of release for a total consumer spree of $65 million.

USHE is poised for a record-breaking fourth quarter with a release schedule representing 36% of the domestic box office of all feature titles being released during that period.

DVD Spotlight on Tom and Jerry

TOM AND JERRY SPOTLIGHT COLLECTION THE PREMIERE VOLUME (Warner Home Video, $26.99) streets Oct. 26, 2004, with 40 of their very best cartoons from 43-56 in the two-disc set, including all of their Oscar winners and three CinemaScope entries. However, be forewarned: three of the shorts on disc one are edited: THE MILKY WAIF, THE TRUCE HURTS and THE LITTLE ORPHAN. WHV said the snafu was unintentional and will be putting out replacement discs very soon at no extra cost. Details to come.

It’s Off to the Wacky Races on DVD

Hanna-Barberas WACKY RACES may have been short-lived from 68-69 cancelled due to protests about excessive violence in childrens programming, of all things yet it still managed to capture the imagination of Saturday morning viewers with its humorous satire of THE GREAT RACE and THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES. Now all 34 episodes can be found on the three-disc DVD set (Warner Home Video, $34.98), which streets Oct. 26, 2004.

Willis Replaces Carrey in Over the Hedge

Bruce Willis is set to replace Jim Carrey as the con-artist raccoon R.J. in DreamWorks' OVER THE HEDGE, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters May 19, 2006. The animated comedy is based on Michael Fry and T. Lewis comic strip. Garry Shandling will voice the pessimistic turtle Verne. The film will follow R.J.s exploitative plans after his woodland neighborhood begins to be encroached upon by a development.

New Family Guy DVD Features Peek at American Dad

Fox Home Entertainment is set to release FAMILY GUY: THE FREAKIN' SWEET COLLECTION ($19.99) on Dec. 14, 2004, which will feature a sneak peek of Seth MacFarlanes newest toon AMERICAN DAD.

The new series follows an overzealous CIA worker who household contains a space alien and a German-speaking goldfish. The FAMILY GUY disk will feature a preview of AMERICAN DAD as well as an interview with MacFarlane about the series.

Bandai Moves Into Canadian Distribution

Bandai Ent. announced the distribution of its anime DVD homevideo properties for the Canadian market. With numerous Japanese animated properties such as MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED and WITCH HUNTER ROBIN on air through Canadian youth broadcaster, YTV Bandai looks to expand to DVD homevideo sales in Canada.

Nicktoons' Film Festival Bows

Nicktoons, Nickelodeon's digital channel for animation, Frederator Studios and ANIMATION MAGAZINE launched the first half-hour of the 14-week Nicktoons Film Festival on Oct. 24, 2004, at 10:00 pm (ET)/7:00 pm (PT). The on-air festival showcases the diversity of independent cartoon filmmaking by animators from around the globe. A total of 14 half-hour specials will air every Sunday from Oct. 24 to Jan. 23, with repeat airings Mondays at 10:00 pm (ET)/7:00 pm (PT).

Animation Checker/Actress Kathrin Victor Services Set Oct. 29

Animation checker and actress Kathrin Victor, who was also known as Kathrin Leichliter, died on Oct. 22, 2004 in Los Angeles from complications after a stroke at the age of 81. From 1960 until her retirement in 2000 she worked for Graphic Arts, Snowball, DeTiege, Eagle, Creston, Hanna-Barbera, DePatie-Freleng, Filmation, Don Bluth, Box Office Originals and Disney TV Animation.

Earthworks Entertainment signed an exclusive multi-year deal with Cartoon Network to air its NINE DOG CHRISTMAS SPECIAL, during the cablenets holiday schedule in 2004.

Sonys Americanized horror remake of JU-ON, THE GRUDGE, toppled SHARK TALE from the top of the box office chart for the weekend ended Oct. 24, 2004, scaring up a whopping $39.1M. Meanwhile, the DreamWorks 3D-animated smash added another $14M for second place to run its impressive total to nearly $137M. Miramaxs SHALL WE DANCE moved up to third place with $8.5M and $24.4M so far. Universals FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS slipped to fourth with $6.9M and $47.2M.

Mirage Animation Offers Animation Financing Scheme

Mirage Animation, a new animation firm headquartered in Montreal, with offices in Los Angeles and New Delhi, is offering a new alternative to the rising costs of animation and game art production. Coming out of its first MIPCOM, Mirage Animation will defer all production related expenses (layout, ink-and-paint, backgrounds, compositing and effects) against broadcast contracts.

Producers would be responsible for pre-production and post costs and would be required to provide Mirage with signed broadcast agreements and evidence that they can finish the post-production.

Scribes Stalked for Hunter Script

Director Uwe Boll and producer Shawn Williamson have hired screenwriters David Schneider and Drew Daywalt (STARK RAVING MAD) to write a feature adaptation of Vivendi Universals videogame, HUNTER: THE RECKONING, reports VARIETY. The story follows a group of men and women who are given supernatural to combat monsters. Pre-production is scheduled to start in February in British Columbia. Boll is not new to bringing videogames to the screen with adaptations of HOUSE OF THE DEAD, ALONE IN THE DARK and BLOODRAYNE, which just finished production.

Fox Goes Old School with Ice Cube Produced Toon

Fox, Ice Cube and FUTURAMA co-creator David X. Cohen have teamed on an animated series about an early 1980s hip-hop crew, titled GRANDMASTER FREAK & THE FURIOUS 15, reports VARIETY. The idea was formed by Cohen, who will produce the series through Ice Cube and producing partner Matt Alvarez's Cube Vision Prods with Alvarez and Cube serving as exec producers.
