Phil Roman To Receive PGA Diversity Award In Beverly Hills Gala

Veteran animator Phil Roman will be honored by the Producers Guild of America at the 2nd Annual Celebration of Diversity to be held on October 1, 2003 at The Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The event, presented in association with DAILY VARIETY and sponsored in part by the Oneida Indian Nation, is a tribute to those producers whose work has broadened the industrys cultural horizons, as well as productions that have stimulated national discussion on significant social issues.

A Box Office Rundown

Universal's THE RUNDOWN, which may prove to be The Rock's breakout starring vehicle, scored a whopping $18.5M in its debut for the weekend ended Sept. 28, 2003. Topping the box office chart also gives Rhythm & Hues some vfx bragging rights as well. Disney's Diane Lane romancer, UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN, debuted in second place with $9.7M.

Cartoon Network Commissions to Create 20 Original Shorts from Aspiring Animators

Revisiting its roots in original animation that produced such mega-hits as THE POWERPUFF GIRLS, DEXTER'S LABORATORY and COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG, Cartoon Network today announced an all-new Cartoon Cartoons Shorts program to commission an initial 20 original shorts covering a wide variety of animation styles and formats, it was announced Sept. 29, 2003 by Jim Samples, evp/gm of Cartoon Network Worldwide.

MIPCOM News: Rainbow Puts Designs on WINX CLUB, Monster Allergy

Rainbow Animation and RAI Fiction have employed fashion designers to catch the eye of buyers and viewers in the new animated offering, WINX CLUB, a 26 half-hour series featuring stylish fairies and cool boys training to be juristic knights.

Premise is about three schools for fairies, witches and boys. Bloom, a fairy in training from Earth and her four schoolmates form the WINX Club to combat their enemies, the witches. The boys lend their aid to the WINX Club in the crusade to eradicate evil.

MIPCOM News: Kickback and One31 Media Join Forces on BC Battlers

Marking its foray in the TV industry, One31 Media has joined forces with Kickback Media to unveil an action-packed animated series, BC BATTLERS. Targeted for kids 6-11, the 52x26 series combines turbo charged dinosaurs with riveting sci-fi adventures.

One of the hottest toy franchises to emerge this year in the U.K., BC BATTLERS will be supported by a TV advertising campaign that runs through to Christmas 2003 on Fox Kids and Cartoon Network. The toy range features cutting-edge radio controlled vehicles.

Cromosomas big offering for MIPCOM Jr. and MIPCOM is TOM, an animated series produced with the EBU. The 26x26 series features a big, friendly dinosaur who goes on big adventures with a little girl named Wanda and a boy named Tip, while he searches for his long, lost homeland. Their journeys around the world offer insights into how to appreciate the world we live in.

Animated Short Films Oscar Entries Due Oct. 1

Makers of animated and live-action short films, as well as countries submitting films in the Foreign Language Film Award category, must submit their entry forms and supporting materials to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for 76th Academy Awards consideration by Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003.

Entries in the Short Films categories must submit the entry form, film synopsis, cast and credits list, stills, film print and proof of qualifying exhibition or festival win. Screenings of the Live-Action and Animated Short Film screenings will start in November.

Csupo to Direct Comic-Inspired Monkeys

Gabor Csupo of the Klasky Csupo animation studio (RUGRATS and WILD THORNBERRYS) will make his feature directorial debut with GREEN MONKEYS, a live-action/computer-animated version of the comic strip about monkeys that act human, a spokesperson confirmed. GREEN MONKEYS is published by Dan's Papers and written by Betty and Michael Paraskevas. The project seems a perfect match for Klasky Csupo, since the strip resembles THORNBERRYS in its graphic style despite the proposed CGI makeover.

Screen Gems Greenlights Underworld 2 & 3

Upon the success of UNDERWORLD in its opening weekend at the box office, Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems have quickly greenlit two additional UNDERWORLD films. Original films writers Danny McBride and Len Wiseman will begin writing the sequels screenplay immediately. Wiseman plans to return as director as well, hoping to start filming as soon as possible. The third film is tentatively set as a prequel to the first film.

MTV Selects Pinnacle Systems' Liquid Editing Solutions

MTV Networks Europe will deploy Pinnacle Systems' Liquid blue, chrome and Liquid Edition (formerly Liquid purple) editing tools within their new, shared workflow operations in Benelux. The purchase is part of an extensive program by MTV Networks Europe to build a fully networked broadcast environment for their MTV, TMF and Nickelodeon TV channel groups within the region.

rhinofx created the effects on LOGICAL ENGINEERING, the :30 GMC spot that aired nationally in August. Working with Jim Sonzero of RSA USA, Los Angeles, California, and Lowe, New York, the rhinofx team was headed by senior inferno artist/partner Vico Sharabani.

Ron Thornton joins DAVE School Team

The Digital Animation & Visual Effects School has added Ron Thornton to its team of instructors. Thornton was a founder of the legendary Animation house Foundation Imaging in Valencia, California, and a pioneer in the use of computers for vfx. His credits include BABYLON 5Babylon 5 (for which he won the Emmy for best visual effects), STAR TREK VOYAGER, DEEP SPACE 9 and ENTERPRISE. He was recently nominated for his work on the series finale of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.

HRA Delivers 5 Pepperidge Farm Spots

The first five commercials in a new animated campaign for Pepperidge Farm have just been completed by Hibbert Ralph Animation in the U.K. The campaign was designed by American illustrator Kevin Kobasic, and directed by HRAs Jerry Hibbert for Young & Rubicam New York. The spots feature Jon, the Pepperidge Farm deliveryman, delivering a variety of Pepperidge Farm products Double Chocolate Chunk Cookies, Mini Cookies, Swirl Bread, Farmhouse Bread and Texas Toast.
