Particleillusion Gets Upgrade

Particle effects software producer wondertouch has announced the release of particleillusion 3.0, a major upgrade and expansion of the company's cornerstone 2D, sprite-based application. Animators who haven't used particleillusion yet have certainly seen the results it's facilitated, in many features such as BEHIND ENEMY LINES, DREAMCATCHER, HART'S WAR, GHOST SHIP, THE CORE AND SWORDFISH, as well as in TV shows including STAR TREK VOYAGER and THAT 70'S SHOW, and in numerous commercials.

The Powerpuff Girls Movie Premieres On Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network hopes to make Memorial Day Weekend in the U.S. memorable for Powerpuff Girl fans with the television debut of THE POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE, the first feature film based on the series. Townsville's being overrun by bad people so Professor Utonium heads to his lab and invents three perfect little girls with incredible powers. But Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup have a lot to learn about being superheroes. Cartoon Network will run THE POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE at 8:00 pm (ET/PT) each night for four consecutive evenings, Friday, May 23-Monday, May 26, 2003.

Delgo Get Love from Hewitt and Kattan

Atlanta-based Fathom Studios has added two more top Hollywood names to its list of voices for its 3D feature film, DELGO, with the addition of Jennifer Love Hewitt (HEARTBREAKERS) and Chris Kattan (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE). They join a cast which already includes Val Kilmer (TOMBSTONE), Michael Clarke Duncan (GREEN MILE), Eric Idle (MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL), and Lou Gossett, Jr. (DIGGSTOWN). Hewitt will bring to life Princess Kyla, a spitfire princess with a big heart, while Kattan will voice Filo, a fast-talking, wisecracking smart aleck.

ASIFA-East Festival Results Are In

ASIFA-East has announced the recipients of their 34th annual Animation Festival. Unlike other festivals, all entries are screened and are voted on by the members who attend the screenings. ASIFA-east is the Eastern U.S. chapter of ASIFA international, which was founded in 1960 by a group of animators to increase the visibility of animated films worldwide. Awards were handed out at 6:00 pm May 4, 2003 at the Tishman Auditorium, 66 West 12th Street in Manhattan, New York.

Henry Selick Joins Carl's Fine Films

Carl's Fine Films, a San Francisco-based commercial animation company, has signed director Henry Selick to its staff of commercial directors. Animation superstar Selick's credits include THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH and MONKEYBONE. Among other successful ad campaigns, he created the original MTV station IDs. He has won top prizes at Annecy, Ottawa and the Annies plus NIGHTMARE was nominated for an Academy Award for best special effects.

Animated Asterix Film To Be Europe Most Expensive Production

Based on the popular comic strip, ASTERIX AND THE VIKINGS will boast a $25 million budget, making it the most expensive European animated feature in history, reported THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The film is an adaptation of a 1967 album, which has Vikings kidnapping little warrior Asterix, so they can learn fear, thus gaining the power to fly. The film will be completely financed by French firm M6 and Denmark's Stefan Fjeldmark (HELP, I'M A FISH) will helm the 75-minute film. Fjeldmark also co-wrote the script with Belgian Jean-Luc Goossens.

French Animated Renaissance Grabbed By Disney

French studio Onyx Films has sold the U.S. distribution rights to its first animated feature, RENAISSANCE to Buena Vista Pictures, reported SCREEN DAILY. The film is an action/suspense flick with a mixture of CGI and re-worked black-and-white images. French firm Millimages will provide the animation for the $15 million production. Christian Volckman, who was nominated for an Oscar for his 1999 short, MAAZ, will direct the film. The film is still looking for further capital from the U.K., which is being negotiated at the Cannes Film Festival by Paris-based Arsan's Helene Sitbon. Independent producer Jake Eberts handled the deal with Disney. Pathe Distribution holds the French theatrical and video rights. Onyx is headed by Anton Soumache and is developing the live-action comedy LA JUNGLE and recently completed Djibril Glissant's urban live-action film LA BONNE ETOILE.

NBC Father Of The Pride Roars With Star Talent

NBC and DreamWorks Television have announced their star-studded cast for the upcoming CGI primetime toon, FATHER OF THE PRIDE. Heading up the cast will be John Goodman (ROSEANNE), along with Orlando Jones (EVOLUTION), Emmy-winner Carl Reiner (THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW) and Cheryl Hines (CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM). The comedy series will chronicle the lives of a pride of white lions that perform in Siegfried & Roy's famous Las Vegas act. The show is set to debut in Fall 2004. Goodman will play Larry, a hard-working lion in the magic act with Hines playing his wife Kate. Reiner will voice Sarmoti, Kates father, who couldn't be more different than Larry. Jones will play Larry's comical best friend Snack, a prankish gopher. CGI versions of Siegfried & Roy will also make appearances in the series. Siegfried & Roy's show is the longest-running act on the Vegas Strip and has sold out every performance for 11 years. Executive producers will be Jonathan Groff (LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN OBRIEN), DreamWorks head Jeffrey Katzenberg, Peter Mehlman (SEINFELD) and Jon Pollack (JUST SHOOT ME). The show will be produced by DreamWorks Television and NBC will retain domestic syndication rights.

Zoic, MAS & Nexus Digital Bring FX to Buffy Curtain Call

Los Angeles-based Zoic Studios, along with motion-capture specialists at Motion Analysis Studios (MAS) and Nexus Digital Studios, have created the epic effects for the show finale of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, airing May 20, 2003 at 8:00 pm on UPN. Zoic co-founder Loni Peristere has been working closely with BUFFY creator Joss Whedon since the first season. Along with his Zoic Studios and fellow digital effects supervisor Patti Gannon, Peristere and Whedon have been batting around ideas for the historic last episode for months.

Animation Guild Ratifies New Contract

By an overwhelming vote, the members of the Animation Guild and Affiliated Optical Electronic and Graphic Arts, Local 839 IATSE have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with the major animation producers. The new Animation Guild agreement offers the same wage minimum increases, health and pension benefits as the IATSE Hollywood Basic Agreement, which was agreed to in November 2002 and ratified in February 2003.

Cyber Sequel Loads Up Big Box Office

Warner Bros.' THE MATRIX: UNLOADED brought in $134.3M since its release May 15, 2003 to deliver the biggest ever four-day gross. SPIDER-MAN holds the second place record now at $125.8M, but the webbed marvel had the biggest ever three-day opening at $114.8M while UNLOAD did $91.8M over three days. The visual effects feast included work from Amalgamated Pixels, Animal Logic, BUF, Bullet Time, CIS, CFX, ESC Entertainment, Giant Killer Robots, PLF Sony Pictures Imageworks and Tippett Studio. Sony/Revolution's DADDY DAY CARE remained in second place with a another $18.8M for a total of $51M in its first two weeks. Twentieth Century Fox's X2: X-MEN UNITED dropped to third place in its third week, taking in another $17.3M for a take of $174.2M. Contributing VFX to the blockbuster were Cinesite, EYETECH Optics, Frantic Films, Kleiser-Walczak Construction Co. and Rhythm & Hues. Twentieth Century Fox's DOWN WITH LOVE, with VFX by Asylum, shot up the chart with its wide release to place fourth with $7M and a $7.1 cume. Disney's THE LIZZIE MCGUIRE MOVIE slipped to fifth place at $4.7M and a $32.3M total. Rainmaker Digital Pictures did VFX for the film based on the hit TV series about the teen with an animated alter ego. Sony's IDENTITY was in sixth place, taking in $3.7M for a $45M total. K.N.B. EFX Group Inc. did VFX work for the suspense flick. Sony/Revolutions' ANGER MANAGEMENT slipped to seventh place, taking in another $3.5M to rack up a total of $128.3M. Sony Pictures Imageworks and The Orphanage did VFX for ANGER. Buena Vista's comedy family/adventure HOLES dug in at eighth place with $3.2M and a $55.9M cume. Digital FilmWorks and Avtoma of L.A. contributed visual effects for VFX supervisor William Mesa, founder of Flash Film Works, whose studio did the majority of the work for the film from Walt Disney Pictures. Warner Bros./Castle Rocks' A MIGHTY WIND ebbed down to ninth place to take in $1.7M and a total of $12.1M. Searchlight's BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM held in tenth place with $1.4M and a total take of $15M. R&B Soul-stress Gray Gears Up Animated Life for WB

Warner Bros. Animation has signed a development deal with sultry voiced R&B superstar Macy Gray to bring her real life to the small screen animated style. The project dubbed A PRETTY GOOD LIFE was originally conceived by Gray, partner Stephen Belafonte, who will serve as producer on the toon, and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, who will executive produce from her address at the talent agency Gotham Group.

Click 3x Draws Blueprint for Food Net Sweepstakes

New York-based Click 3x recently finished up production on a spot promoting Food Network's "Dine In Dine Out Sweepstakes." The idea for the 30-second spot germinated with the cable net's in-house creative staff, after which Click 3x's Creative Director Iain Greenway and his compatriots were enlisted to design the visuals and produce the ad. The commercial interjects Food Network personalities into a stylized 3D kitchen and/or restaurant setting. The visual concept is reminiscent of architectural blueprints, featuring objects rendered in stroked outlines.

X2 FX Wizards Discuss Flick At LA SIGGRAPH Meeting

Sponsored by Houdini software-makers Side Effects Software, the next meeting of the LA Chapter of SIGGRAPH will host a screening and discussion of X2: X-MEN UNITED with visual effects wizards from Rhythm & Hues and Cinesite on May 20, 2003. Included in the behind-the-scenes discussions will be Rhythm & Hues' tornado effects lead Doug Bloom and lead effects Animator Mike O'Neal; and Cinesite's CG supervisor Greg Anderson, CG effects td Craig "X-Ray" Halperin and CG supervisor Arnon Manor. Side Effects will demonstrate its Houdini products during a reception from 6:30 - 7:30 pm, with the discussion beginning at 7:30 pm followed immediately by the screening. The event is being held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, Academy of Motion Picture Artists & Sciences, 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California. Megaman Premieres At E3 And On Kids' WB!

MEGAMAN: NT WARRIOR premieres on the U.S. airwaves May 17, 2003 on Kids' WB! following a special preview at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles May 1416, 2003 where CAPCOM was showcasing the game series. Based on the popular comic book series, MEGAMAN: NT WARRIOR is set in the not-so-distant future during the Cyber Revolution of the year 200X, where virtually all technology is linked to a central computer system.
