Apple Announces Final Cut Pro 3

Final Cut Pro 3, which will be available for Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 later in the month of December, was premiered at DVExpo in Los Angeles, California the week of December 2, 2001. Final Cut Pro 3, Apple's latest version of their video editing software, debuts OfflineRT, an offline format that holds up to five times as much footage as the DV format, and new professional color correction tools previously available only in solutions costing tens of thousands of dollars more.

David Jacobs Promoted To Senior VP, Consumer Products Of Gullane

Gullane Entertainment has promoted David Jacobs to senior vice president, consumer products for the Americas. Jacobs will now oversee the newly created consumer products division in North and South America. This division encompasses Gullane's licensing, publishing, consumer marketing and live events for such properties as THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE and GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS. Jacobs joined Gullane in 1998 as vice president, group head of U.S. licensing. Prior to joining Gullane, Jacobs spent 11 years with Sesame Workshop, previously Children's Television Workshop.

Berlin Short Film Festival Winners

The 17th Berlin International Short Film Festival took place November 6-11, 2001 and featured 70 screenings including six competitions and twenty special programs. HASTA LOS HUESOS by René Castillo took the prize for best animation, and Gabriele Pennacchioli's THE SHARK AND THE PIANO won first prize in the Children's Short Film Competition. All of the animated winners are listed below:

Vanilla Sky Tops Box Office

Vanilla Sky Tops Box Office. The psychological drama VANILLA SKY, with visual effects by Digital Domain, was number one at the box office this weekend, bringing in a strong $25M in its debut. Casino heist flick OCEANS ELEVEN, with visual effects by E=mc2 and Cinesite, ran a close second earning $23M for a two-week cume of $73.3M. HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERERS STONE, with visual effects by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Rhythm & Hues, fell two spots to fourth, with $9.9M for the weekend and $253.3M to date.

SANTA, BABY!, a new animated holiday special, will premiere Monday, December 17 at 8:00 pm on FOX. The one hour special is produced by Rankin/Bass and sponsored by Coca-Cola. Featuring the voices of Gregory Hines, Eartha Kitt, Patti LaBelle and Vanessa Williams, SANTA BABY! tells the story of Noel, a once successful songwriter who becomes a sidewalk Santa in the hope of breaking his writer's block. Universal Interactive To Publish Games Based On Lord Of The Rings

As part of Vivendi Universal Publishing's long-term deal with Tolkien Enterprises, Universal Interactive will publish games based on J.R.R. Tolkien's best-selling saga THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The company acquired the exclusive rights to develop interactive entertainment based on selected Tolkien literary works. Universal Interactive will create games for multiple next-generation and PC platforms with content derived from Tolkien's novels THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, THE TWO TOWERS and THE RETURN OF THE KING.

CFX Says, "Howdy, Pilgrim."

Jamie Pilgrim has been named to the position of research and development technical director at visual effects house CFX (formerly Centropolis Effects). Pilgrim was most recently a creature technical director on LORD OF THE RINGS and his work included writing proprietary software for muscle systems, tree and branch generation and articulated body dynamics, as well as developing the look for several key particle effects for the film. As lead animator on THE MATRIX, he wrote proprietary Maya plug-ins for procedural animation and animated shots through several sequences.

Battle of the Planets Screening

Rhino Home Video hosts a special screening of Battle of the Planets at the Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention on December 16, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. Free t-shirts will be awarded to the first 500 people in attendance.

An exclusive autograph session follows at 1:00 p.m. with voice talent Janet Waldo and Alan Young.

Waking Life Is Named Best Animated Film By NY Film Critics

The day after it was announced that the 74th Academy Awards would present an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, the New York Film Critics Circle has chosen WAKING LIFE as best animated film of the year. The 37-member New York Film Critics Circle is made up of New York-based newspaper, magazine and online film critics. While the awards are responsible for generating early Oscar-buzz for the winning films, the Circle is also known for their idiosyncratic picks. Now that the Animated Feature category is a lock, the critics will be weighing in right and left with their choices.

Discovery Kids UK Gets Why?

Monster Distributes has just completed a deal with Discovery Kids UK to broadcast its educational animated series WHY? The series, which is scheduled to begin airing January 1, 2002, was also recently sold to Mediapark for Pay TV in Spain. A Pay TV deal in Brazil is currently in negotiation. The 24 x 2 minute pre-school series was animated by Irish animation company Brown Bag Films, and explains how things work.

Ndi Media And Cité-Amérique Launch Wumpasworld.com

NDi Media and Canadian producer Cité-Amérique have launched wumpasworld.com, a Web convergence project featuring interactive games and other content designed for children three to five years old. The Website is based on characters from WUMPA'S WORLD, a 26 x 15 pre-school television series produced by Cité-Amérique, which features a unique combination of puppetry and animatronics. The television show currently airs on YTV's Treehouse TV.

Gullane Sends Thomas And Friends To Video And DVD

Gullane Entertainment has extended its partnership with Anchor Bay Entertainment for the distribution of THOMAS & FRIENDS videos and DVDs through the year 2007. The lengthening of the home video and DVD agreement will see Gullane Entertainment providing Anchor Bay with new episodes of THOMAS & FRIENDS for distribution in September 2002. Scheduled releases are "The Best of James," to be released on video and DVD and "Make Someone Happy," to be released on DVD. Both titles will have a street release date of March 5, 2002.
