Pixomondo Opens New Flagship Studio in Los Angeles

Battle of the Smithsonian Beats Out Battling the Machines

Family action comedy NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN got the top space at the Memorial Day box office (ending May 25) with $70.05 million. The Fox film, led by Ben Stiller, has vfx from CafeFX, Dac Studios, Giant Studios, Image Engine Design and Pixel Playground.

Also opening this weekend was TERMINATOR SALVATION (Warner Bros., vfx from ILM, Matte World Digital, Pixel Liberation Front, Proof, Rising Sun Pictures and Stan Winston Studio), which placed second with $51.9M.

ANGELS & DEMONS opened soft at the U.S. box office for the weekend of May 15-17. The religious thriller (vfx by Double Negative, CIS Vancouver, The Moving Picture Co., Plowman Craven & Associates, and The Senate Visual Effects) put $46.2M in the collection plate for Columbia Pictures.

At the third annual ELAN Awards, LEFT 4 DEAD won four out of the nine videogame categories. IRON MAN won for best vfx film and WALL-E was chosen for best animated feature.

First Houdini-based VFX Studio Opens in Singapore

Singapore's visual effects industry is set to receive a huge boost, with the setting up of a studio to train specialists and develop related high-end software technologies.

The NYP-SESI Visual Effects Studio, a collaboration between Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and Canadian software developer Side Effects Asia Pacific (SESI-AP), will train and produce talent in visual effects, games and interactive digital media for Singapore and the region.

Yowza Expands Development Team

Toronto's Yowza Animation is expanding their development team with the recent addition of Heather Walker as Head of Development. The company's reel includes work with large studios such as Warner Brothers, Universal, Disney and considerable television service work. Yowza's development slate includes original I.P. as well as optioned materials and ranges across all ages, genres and media including traditional broadcast, new media and direct-to-DVD.

Yowza plan to roll out the new additions to their I.P. roster at Kidscreen Summit in New York in February.
