ANGELS & DEMONS opened soft at the U.S. box office for the weekend of May 15-17. The religious thriller (vfx by Double Negative, CIS Vancouver, The Moving Picture Co., Plowman Craven & Associates, and The Senate Visual Effects) put $46.2M in the collection plate for Columbia Pictures.
Last week's box office champ, STAR TREK (vfx by ILM, Lola Visual Effects, Evil Eye Pictures, and Svengali Visual Effects) beamed up an additional $43.03M, rocketing its cume to $147.6M. X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE (vfx by Cinesite, Hydraulx, Image Engine Design, Lola Visual Effects, Matte World Digital, Rising Sun Pictures, Soho VFX and Vital Distraction) slashed its way into third with $14.7M, lifting its box office totals to $151M.
Warner Bros./New Line romantic comedy GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST (vfx by CIS Hollywood and Rhythm & Hues) placed fourth possessing another $6.65M, levitating its cume to $39.9M. Coming in at #5, Screen Gems' OBSESSED (vfx from Lola Visual Effects) collected $4.59M, lifting its cume to $62.6M. Warner Bros.' 17 AGAIN returned to charts in sixth with $3.4M, increasing its totals to $58.4M.
Paramount/DreamWorks' 3-D animated feature MONSTERS VS. ALIENS held strong with a very slight 2 percent drop from last week, adding $3.2M to its hefty $190.7M total. Paramount/DreamWorks' THE SOLOIST flipped spots with MVA, coming in at #8 with another $2.4M, making its four week total $27.5M.
Tumbling from three spots from its debut, Summit Ent.'s NEXT DAY AIR delivered $2.2M in ninth, making its total stash $7.6M. Rounding out the top ten was Disney's EARTH, which took in $1.7M, making its total box office $29.1M.
In other animation box office news, BATTLE FOR TERRA (Lionsgate) earned $36,488, with a cume of $1.6M and Focus Features' CORALINE made $33,277, with a cume of $75.1M.
Summit's FLY ME TO THE MOON did $18,260 and in 40 weeks has earned $13.75M.
