Kairo Remake Gets American Stars

Kristen Bell (TV's VERONICA MARS) and newcomer Steve Talley will star in long in development remake of Japanese supernatural horror film KAIRO titled PULSE, reports THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Making his feature debut will be commercial director Jim Sonzero. The film will be produced by Neo Art & Logics Mike Leahy and Joel Soisson. Production is set to begin early this summer in Romania. The story centers on a website run by an evil force whose takes control of web surfers lives. Wes Craven was originally attached to helm the project.

Artist Jeremy Engleman returns to the Gnomon Workshop with a series of texture resource DVDs. This series features hundreds of original brick, metal and wood textures as 24-bit, seamlessly tileable uncompressed tiffs. Also included are the corresponding bump and specular maps, textures with alpha masks, and more.

Warner Bros. Climbs into The Treehouse

Warner Bros. Pictures has bought Ron Friedman and Steve Bencichs live-action, coming-of-age adventure THE TREEHOUSE.Wes Ball will make his feature directing debut on the film, with Tapestry Films Robert Levy, Peter Abrams and Andrew Panay producing. Warners' Lionel Wigram and Lauren Craniotes, along with Warner Bros. Animation president Sander Schwartz, are shepherding the film.

The story chronicles the adventures of a lonely boy who uncovers a magical treehouse, which transports him to a fantastical forest ruled children rule and parents dont exist.

Damage DAM Software Launched with Valiant

The Eureka Initiative in the U.K., dedicated to strengthening European competitiveness with innovative technology, developed the Damage software tool to track and manage digital assets for VALIANT, the regions first 3D-animated feature and the maiden project from Vanguard Animation and London-based Ealing Studios.

Now that VALIANT has been released in the U.K. and will bow in mainland Europe in July and Aug. 19 in the U.S. (through Disney), it is hoped that Eureka project E! 3062 Damage will now open up a while new global market for the European animation industry.

The HP board of directors unanimously selected Mark Hurd to serve as the company's ceo/president. Hurd takes up his new duties on April 1, 2005, and joins HP's board. He succeeds Robert Wayman, a 36-year company veteran who has been cfo since 1984 and was named interim ceo in February 2005. Wayman, 59, will remain cfo and continue to serve as a member of HP's board.

Warner Bros. Interactive Ent. and Midway Games Inc. announced the signing of a multi-territory publishing agreement to develop videogames based on HAPPY FEET, a comedy adventure written and directed by George Miller (the BABE movies, LORENZO'S OIL, the MAD MAX trilogy), scheduled for release in November 2006. The multi-platform deal includes games for console, handheld and PC platforms.

New Astro Boy Blasts Off on DVD

Osamu Tezukas groundbreaking ASTRO BOY was updated by Sony in 2003, with some episodes airing last year on Kids WB! and Cartoon Network. Now the 2 1/2D cartoon series comes to DVD on March 29, 2005 (Columbia TriStar Home Ent., $49.95) with all 50 episodes in a five-disc set. Time has finally caught up with ASTRO BOY (whose birth date is April 7, 2003), which tells the story of a young robot modeled after the son of a research scientist, who becomes a reluctant superhero striving to bring humans and robots together.

Wild Brain Spoofs Action Movies in Coke Campaign

Wild Brain director Gordon Clark recently completed NINJA, the second animated spot in a comedic campaign for Coca-Cola via Z Publicidad/Mexico. The first spot, BULLFIGHT aired last month and NINJA began airing this month. The two :30 spots are geared to a Spanish-speaking audience and are currently airing throughout Latin America.

Wild Brain used a loose, painterly technique with watercolor textures in the animation. They wanted the characters to look cartoon-like while maintaining a more adult vibe.

Nicktoons Calls For Nextoons: The Nicktoons Film Festival

After a successful first season, with hundreds of entries received from around the world, Nicktoons joins forces again with Frederator Studios to showcase the diversity of independent animated filmmaking with the renamed Nextoons: The Nicktoons Film Festival. Animators from around the world can submit entries from March 28 through June 17, 2005. Entry forms can be downloaded on www.nicktoons.com. The TV festival is looking for a large selection of short films created in any style of animation which are 10-minutes in length or under.

Time is running out to submit scripts from TV and film productions for The Humanitas Prize, which affirms human values in entertainment. Animation writers may compete for $10,000 in the children's teleplay category. TV programs must have been broadcast between April 2, 2004 and April 1, 2005 to qualify. Feature films must have screened in at least 60 U.S. markets or at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.
