G-Force Has Star Power

Nicolas Cage, Steve Buscemi and Tracy Morgan will provide the lead voices in Disney's G-FORCE, the live-action/3D-animated feature, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Slated to open May 1, 2009, G-FORCE marks the directorial debut of Oscar-winning VFX Supervisor Hoyt Yeatman (THE ABYSS), who also shared a technical. It's about a super smart group of animal commandos that work for the government and try to thwart an evil billionaire. Bill Nighy and Will Arnett are among the live actors. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing.

Ben Cross Boards Star Trek as Sarek

Ben Cross has been cast as Sarek, the Vulcan father of Spock, in J.J. Abrams' upcoming STAR TREK feature film, reports STAR TREK.COM.

Cross, a graduate of London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, rose to international stardom with his breakout role as runner Harold Abrahams in the Academy Award-winning 1981 film Chariots of Fire. He will be seen in the upcoming Hero Wanted with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ray Liotta.

Synthespian Studios Produces New 3-D Film for Radio City Christmas Spectacular

This year Synthespian Studios produced a new version of the 70mm stereoscopic 3-D film that has opened "The Radio City Christmas Spectacular" since 2001.

For this year's show, Synthespian Studios Directors Jeff Kleiser and Diana Walczak worked closely with the show's director/choreographer Linda Haberman to plan an extension of the film. While previous editions of the film started with Santa arriving in New York (just over the Statue of Liberty to be exact), this year Haberman wanted Santa's journey to start at the North Pole.

The Embassy Uses modo 301 for Terminus Short

The Embassy used modo 301 for TERMINUS, a new short film by director Trevor Cawood. The visual effects team made extensive use of modo 301's new painting, texturing and UV unwrap tools to create CG characters that represent various urban installments and materials, including a concrete column character, an airport baggage turnstile character and an information kiosk character.

Beowulf Slays Bee Movie and Shines in 3-D

Robert Zemeckis' performance captured BEOWULF opened at number one with $27.5M for Paramount Pictures during the weekend ended Nov. 18, 2007. However, bolstered by animation and vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks, it wasn't surprising that the 3-D gross accounted for nearly half the business. The Real D digital 3-D engagement brought in $8M in 638 locations, while IMAX 3-D delivered $3.58M on 84 domestic IMAX screens for a company percentage record. BEOWULF also performed well internationally, grossing an estimated $660,000 from 13 IMAX screens.

Goofy Hooks Up with National Treasure Sequel

Instead of opening with ENCHANTED on Nov. 21, the new 2D Goofy short from Walt Disney Animation Studios, HOW TO HOOK UP YOUR HOME THEATER, will make its theatrical debut with NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS on Dec. 21.

This is surprising, considering that Kevin Lima's ENCHANTED opens with 10 minutes of 2D animation of the fairy tale world.

Disney Confirms Burton's 3-D Alice & Frankenweenie Flicks

Walt Disney has confirmed that its has signed Tim Burton to a two-picture deal to make the 3-D films ALICE IN WONDERLAND and FRANKENWEENIE, reports the trades.

First up will be a performance-capture, live-action ALICE adaptation, which was written by LION KING and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST scribe Linda Woolverton based on Lewis Carroll's classic children's book. Richard Zanuck, Joe Roth and Suzanne and Jennifer Todd are the producers of the film, which will start production early next year.

Zathura Sister Grows Fangs for Twilight

Kristen Stewart (ZATHURA, INTO THE WILD) has signed on to Summit Ent.'s adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance thriller series TWILIGHT, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Catherine Hardwicke is the director.

Adapted by Melissa Rosenberg, the story follows 17-year-old Bella Swan (Stewart), who, after falling for vampire classmate Edward, is put in mortal danger when Edward's rival rolls into town.

Jungle Cruise Cruisin' Along at Disney

Disney head Dick Cook said in an interview with BOX OFFICE MOJO that the JUNGLE CRUISE feature was "a top priority" for the company. David Hoberman is producing, but a script has not been written.

As for the plot, Cook said a family would play the central role, with the skipper as the impetus to their adventure, serving as a cross between Indiana Jones and Jack Sparrow.

Harry Potter 6 Completes Casting

Casting has been completed on the much-anticipated sixth installment of the Warner Bros. Pictures HARRY POTTER film franchise, HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE.

David Yates, who directed HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, returns to direct. David Heyman, the producer of all of the HARRY POTTER films, is producing the film, together with David Barron. Screenwriter Steve Kloves, who scripted the first four installments, is adapting the screenplay, based on the book by J.K. Rowling.

Reilly Takes Bite Out of Cirque du Freak

CHICAGO actor John C. Reilly is set to play the lead vampire in Universal's adaptation of CIRQUE DU FREAK, reports VARIETY. Paul Weitz adapted Darren Shan's children's series and is set to direct.

The story follows a vampire who takes a 14-year-old boy as his assistant, turning the youth into a half-vampire, who will play a key role in a war between vampires and the rival Vampanese.

Weitz and Lauren Shuler Donner will produce the film, which will begin filming in February.

IMAX & DreamWorks Sign Four Pic Deal

IMAX Corp. and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. announced a deal to release the studio's first three 3-D motion pictures worldwide in IMAX 3-D. The IMAX 3-D releases will include MONSTERS VS. ALIENS in March 2009, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON in November 2009 and SHREK GOES FOURTH in May 2010. A fourth DreamWorks Animation title, KUNG FU PANDA, will be released in IMAX's 2-D format in June 2008. The IMAX 3-D titles are expected to be among the first presented with IMAX's digital 3-D projection system, which is scheduled to be launched beginning June 2008.

Dark Country Goes 3-D

With many theaters equipping themselves for 3-D in anticipation of James Cameron's AVATAR, Hyde Park Ent. and Stage 6 Films are jumping on the 3-D craze with the noir thriller THE DARK COUNTRY, reports VARIETY. PUNISHER star Thomas Jane will make his directing debut on the film, which will shoot in high-definition. A 2-D version will also be made.

Written by Tab Murphy (TARZAN), the story follows a couple, played by Ron Perlman (HELLBOY) and Lauren German (HOSTEL: PART II), whose honeymoon trip turns into a nightmare.

Dragon Ball Z Leads Cast, Kung Fu Hustle Star Producing

Twentieth Century Fox has found its leads for the live-action screen adaptation of DRAGON BALL Z, which is being produced by KUNG FU HUSTLE star/director/writer Stephen Chow, report the trades. Justin Chatwin (WAR OF THE WORLDS) will play Goku, while James Marsters (TV's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) will play villain Piccolo.

Based on Akira Toriyama's popular manga, the story follows warrior Goku as he sets out to defend Earth against villains bent on controlling mystical objects, which could give them the power to rule the universe.

Pathfinder Helmer Not Scared of Friday the 13th

Marcus Nispel, director of PATHFINDER and the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake, is in closing talks to helm the reboot of the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. New Line, Paramount/MTV and Platinum Dunes are producing.

Written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the story isn't a straight remake. The hockey mask-wearing Jason was not the killer in the original film and did not don the mask until the third film. This production will feature the iconic villain hacking up teenagers at the original film's Crystal Lake location.

Entourage's Dillon Books into Hotel for Dogs

ENTOURAGE actor Kevin Dillon has signed onto DreamWorks' live-action family film, HOTEL FOR DOGS, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Dillion will play the foster parent of two orphaned teens that keep nine stray dogs in an abandoned hotel. The cast also includes Emma Roberts, Don Cheadle, Lisa Kudrow and Johnny Simmons.

Jeff Lowell adapted Lois Duncan's 1971 children's book for the screenplay. Thor Freudenthal will direct, with Lauren Shuler Donner, Jack Leslie and Jon Gordon producing.

Watchmen Locates Moloch the Mystic

MAX HEADROOM star Matt Frewer will play Moloch the Mystic in Zack Snyder's WATCHMEN, according to MTV. The cast also includes Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Carla Gugino and Stephen McHattie. In the graphic novel, Moloch is a vice lord who comes in conflict with "masks" such as Nite Owl, Ozymandias, and Doctor Manhattan.

Luma Pictures Handles VFX for No Country For Old Men

Luma Pictures helped recreate the brutal, untamed landscape of the New American West in providing visual effects for the new Coen Brothers film NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (which opened Nov. 9 through Miramax). The studio was the sole vfx supplier for the film, delivering more than 60 shots, including stunningly real CG wildlife and difficult action sequences.

Scott Thrilled About Stones

Ridley Scott has signed on to direct Fox 2000's supernatural thriller STONES, reports VARIETY. Matt Cirulnick penned the script and Scott's Scott Free will produce. In the story, ancient religious sites around the globe are being destroyed and it is discovered that Stonehenge is the link that binds the strange occurrences. The project won't continue development until the conclusion of the writers strike.

Weinstein Co. Picks Up Norwegian Kill Bill Spoof

The Weinstein Co. has picked up the U.S., U.K. and Australia rights to KILL BULJO, a Norwegian spoof of KILL BILL, VARIETY reports. The $250,000 feature has become an unexpected international hit and has been sold in Japan, Poland, Turkey, Germany, Thailand, the Benelux countries, France, Brazil, Israel, Romania, South Africa, Russia, the Baltic countries, Spain, Bulgaria and Portugal.

Weinstein will most likely release the film direct-to-DVD.

Tommy Wirkola co-wrote, co-produced and directed the film with a group of his friends, via Yellow Bastard Prods.

Juno Pair Find Jennifer's Body Together

A few weeks ago, the hot writer of JUNO, Diablo Cody, set up her horror comedy JENNIFER'S BODY at Fox Atomic. Now THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER says JUNO director Jason Reitman and his Hard C partner Dan Dubiecki have joined the film as producers, along with Mason Novick. TRANSFORMERS female lead Megan Fox has signed on to star.

The script follows a "Plain Jane" girl who must kill her cheerleader best friend after the girl is possessed by a demon and begins killing boys. Later, she must escape from jail to stop the Satan-worshiping rock band that transformed her friend.

Winona Ryder Beams Up for Star Trek

Spock (Zachary Quinto) now has a mother, as Winona Ryder has been cast as his human parent in J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK feature from Paramount Pictures, VARIETY reports. Roger Guyett is the vfx supervisor for ILM.

The new film will chronicle the early adventures of the Starship Enterprise under Capt. James T. Kirk, who will be played by Chris Pine (JUST MY LUCK). The cast also includes Karl Urban, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Eric Bana, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin and Leonard Nimoy.

STAR TREK is slated for a Christmas Day 2008 release.

Greenwood To Play Enterprise's First Captain

Paramount has cast Bruce Greenwood (NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS) as the Enterprise's first captain Christopher Pike in J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The character appeared in Gene Roddenberry's unaired pilot for the original TV series, which was turned down by CBS and later retooled by NBC. The unaired pilot was later weaved into a two-part episode in the first season of STAR TREK. The new film will chronicle the early adventures of the Starship Enterprise under Capt. James T. Kirk, who will be played by Chris Pine (JUST MY LUCK).
