Battle of the Smithsonian Beats Out Battling the Machines

Family action comedy NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN got the top space at the Memorial Day box office (ending May 25) with $70.05 million. The Fox film, led by Ben Stiller, has vfx from CafeFX, Dac Studios, Giant Studios, Image Engine Design and Pixel Playground.

Also opening this weekend was TERMINATOR SALVATION (Warner Bros., vfx from ILM, Matte World Digital, Pixel Liberation Front, Proof, Rising Sun Pictures and Stan Winston Studio), which placed second with $51.9M.

Disney Remaking Flight of the Navigator

Disney is prepping a remake of their 23-year-old sci-fi adventure movie FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, with Brad Copeland set to write the script.

Mandeville partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman will produce. John Hyde, an exec producer on the 1986 original, will reprise that role for the new film. Mandeville SVP Albert Page will oversee development and exec produce with Disney's Kristin Burr overseeing for the studio.

Eisner Pops in Writer for Bazooka Joe Feature

Michael Eisner's Tornante Co. has hired Mike Hammer to write the screenplay for a BAZOOKA JOE feature, based on the comicstrip that where included in Bazooka bubble gum, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. This will be Hammer's first professional script after graduating from Chapman University. Hammer's spec script, SONNY TAKES TO PERU caught the attention of Tornante execs. Eisner acquired Bazooka in 2007 when he purchased the Topps trading card company for $380 million.

New Deal Studios Effects Night at the Museum 2 & Terminator Salvation

New Deal Studios (NDS) provided visual effects work on two Memorial Day weekend releases, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN and TERMINATOR SALVATION.

"We live in a democratized visual effects world. How do you differentiate yourself in today's age of globalization, commoditization, ubiquity of effects tools and 'free on the internet' mentality?" asks Shannon Blake Gans, managing partner at New Deal. "We are combating all these downward pressures by getting back to the basics and telling a compelling story fueled by passion for our art."

POW's Nick Ratchet Locks in Writers

According to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, THE ROCK's writing team of Douglas Cook and David Weisberg has been hired to write POW Ent. and Disney's NICK RATCHET. Based on an idea from Stan Lee, the Jekyll & Hyde story follows a timid cop and his hard-hitting online avatar law enforcer Nick Ratchet. Richard LaGravenese (FREEDOM WRITERS) is set to direct. Larry Jacobson and Sonny Grosso are the producers with Lee and POW partner Gill Champion exec producing.

Robert Evans Producing UFO Feature

Famed Hollywood producer Robert Evans, along with Avi Haas and Henri M. Kessler, will produce a feature film based on UFO, a British TV series from 1970s, reports VARIETY. Ryan Gaudet and Joseph Kanarek will write the screenplay.

Created by Gerry Anderson, set in 1980, the story followed a secret military unit that attempts to stop aliens from abducting and murdering humans for their body parts. The film version will take place in 2020.

Half-Blood Prince, Transformers Footage to Debut at MTV Movie Awards

Techno Thriller Daemon Coming to Big Screen

Walter Parkes and David DiGilio have been hired by Paramount Pictures to write a screenplay based on Daniel Suarez's techno thriller DAEMON, per VARIETY.

The story is about a game designer, who, before he died, set up a program to fight mankind. The novel will be published in January, with a sequel expected. Parkes has not written for the screen since SNEAKERS (1992).

Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will produce via their DreamWorks-based shingle, and also have DINNER WITH THE SCHMUCKS with Paul Rudd and Steve Carell and actioner MOTORCADE from Len Wiseman.

Sherlock Holmes Trailer Hits Net

Warner Bros. has released the first teaser for Guy Ritchie's take on SHERLOCK HOLMES. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. Rachel McAdams is the film's love interest with Mark Strong taking the villain role. WB as set Dec. 25th as the release date.

Green Knight to Battle House of Usher

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER says that Green Knight Ventures is working on a modern spin to Edgar Allen Poe's THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER. The cast includes Claire Forlani, Dougray Scott and Rufus Sewell. THE USHERS will be filmed in 3-D by director Stephen Kay based on a script by Gian Marco Masoni. The original story centers on Roderick Usher and his recently buried sister whose seems to be lingering in the house.

Magnolia Captures Li's Warlords

Magnolia Pictures has scooped up North American rights to historical epic WARLORDS, which stars Jey Li and Andy Lau, according to VARIETY. The distributor plans to release the film in late summer. Set during the 1860's Taiping Rebellion, the story follows a general (Li) who survives a slaughter by playing dead and the group of bandits he joins forces with afterward. Peter Chan (3 EXTREMES II) directed the Chinese hit.

Hayden Christensen and Djimon Hounsou will star in MANDRAKE, the film adaptation of comic strip MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN by Lee Falk, per COMINGSOON.net.

DEEP IMPACT director Mimi Leder will helm the film written by Josh Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly, JV Hart and Ian Jeffers from an original story by Kevin Bernhardt.

Universal has hired HANCOCK director Peter Berg to sink battleships, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Jon and Erich Hoeber have been commissioned to adapt the classic Hasbro game. While no plot details have surfaced, Universal is looking for a big naval action flick out of this one.

Funny Little Bugs Coming in 3-D

MK2 game studio head Nathanael Karmitz and Onyx Films' president Aton Soumache will produce a 3-D animated film and videogame called FUNNY LITTLE BUGS, reports VARIETY. Adapted from Antoon Krings' bestselling kids series, the film will carry a budget of $33 million. Krings will co-direct the film, which will start production in January 2010.

Nu Images Travels with Thomas Jane's Dark Country

VARIETY reports that Nu Image has secured foreign rights to Thomas Jane's 3-D thriller DARK COUNTRY. Jane also stars with Ron Perlman and Lauren German. The story follows newlyweds stuck on the Nevada highway and the hell they experience there. Hyde Park's Patrick Aiello and Ashok Amritraj produced. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has the U.S. rights.

Universal Music to Go Around the World in 50 Years

THE HANGOVER writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have been tapped to turn Disney's themed amusement park land Tomorrowland into a feature film, according to ComingSoon.net. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is set to star as test pilot Rip, who gets transported to the future. Lucas and Moore will take a non-retro look at the future for what they describe as "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN in space."
