Malaysia Setting Eyes on International Film Market

On March 7, 2005, National Film Development Corp. Malaysia (Finas) Chairman Datuk Abdul Aziz Rahman urged Malaysian feature, documentary and animation filmmakers to look toward making films that appeal to an international market, reports BERNAMA. The Malaysian tends to make films that appeal to specific local tastes, which make quick profits.

Abdul Aziz said, "Most of them (movie producers) never think that messages conveyed to the audience should be given priority".

Tehran International Animation Fest Opens

The 4th Tehran International Animation Festival opened March 6, 2005, at the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (IIDCYA) and will run through March 10. Four 2005 Oscar Award nominees are scheduled to go on screen in the festival. 1,450 Iranian and foreign animation films will be screen with 446 selected for the domestic and international competition sections. 211 are Iranian-made.

‘90s Fantastic Four Series Coming to DVD

As a way to cash in on the hype surrounding the July 8, 2005 release of the FANTASTIC FOUR live-action feature, Buena Vista Home Ent. will release a box set of the entire FANTASTIC FOUR animated series, which aired from September 1994 to February 1996. The 30-minute show aired as part of the Marvel Action Hour along with IRON MAN. Produced by Genesis Ent., Marvel Prods., New World Ent. and TMS Ent., 15 of the 26 episodes were direct remakes of episodes of the 1960s Hanna-Barbera FANTASTIC FOUR series. The first season contained introductions by creator Stan Lee.

Nicktoons Enrolls Xilam Animation’s Shuriken School

Nicktoons, Nickelodeon's digital channel for kids' animated hits, has ordered SHURIKEN SCHOOL, a quirky playground comedy with a martial arts twist about a boy's adventures at Ninja school, from Paris-based studio, Xilam Animation. The 26x13 series is based on an original idea by Spanish studio Zinkia Entertainment and will air on Nicktoons in 2006.

Buena Vistas family comedy starring Vin Diesel, THE PACIFIER proved too much for MGMs GET SHORTY sequel, BE COOL, in the battle of the post-Oscar box office openers for the weekend ended March 6, 2005. THE PACIFIER (with vfx by ILM) scored $30.5M to BE COOLS $23.4M. Coming in third was Sonys Will Smith hit, HITCH, which raked in another $12.1M for a cume of $138M. Last weeks number one finisher, DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN, fell to fourth and pulled in $11M and $37M to date for Lions Gate.

British high humor and high school hijinks are in store for viewers tuning into BROMWELL HIGH, an animated comedy following the adventures of three exceptionally naughty schoolgirls, one maverick headmaster and a bunch of desperate, underpaid teachers, as it premieres on Canadas TELETOON March 7, 2005 at 10:30 pm.

Atari and Spark Unlimited Strike Partnership

Atari Inc. it has entered into an exclusive, long-term agreement with Spark Unlimited, developer of CALL OF DUTY: FINEST HOUR, for worldwide publishing rights across all media to all future titles developed by the award-winning creative team at Spark Unlimited. Red vs. Blue Online Machinima Features Barenaked Lady

Ed Robertson, lead singer and guitar player for the multi-platinum rock band Barenaked Ladies, premiers in his first cameo role in this weeks special double-length 50th episode of the online Machinima series, RED VS. BLUE. Robertson plays Captain Flowers, the ill-fated leader of the Blue army.

This episode marks the third collaboration between Robertson and series creator Rooster Teeth Prods. Rooster Teeth created custom RED VS. BLUE clips that Barenaked Ladies showed on their last two concert tours of North America.

King of the Hill Scribes Ink Big Deal with Paramount

KING OF THE HILL writers Aron Abrams and Greg Thompson have signed a two-year, seven-figure deal with Paramount, reports VARIETY. As part of the deal, the duo will create, develop and exec produce series programming. In addition, the team will be developing a live-action CBS series for comedian Aisha Tyler. The deal is a move by new president David Stapf to strengthen the list of writers working for the studio.

Control Character Emotions in New Cecropia Game

At Amusement Showcase International in Chicago, Cecropia launched a preview of its first filmgame, called THE ACT, an interactive comedy about relationships, deception and the pursuit of romance. THE ACT gives players the unique experience of playing a game that feels more like a movie. Players control the characters' emotions while they experience the interactive story. The characters' feelings are apparent through highly skilled personality-centric animation, which is being animated by Cecropia's animators -- alumni of Disney Feature Film Animation Studios.

A new videogame rating category, E10+ (Everyone 10 and older), was introduced by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), to help consumers more easily differentiate between games that have content appropriate for the whole family and games that are suitable for ages 10 and older.
