Princess Natasha Leaps From the Web to Cartoon Network and Little, Brown Books

America Online has signed major licensing deals with the Cartoon Network and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, which extend its original PRINCESS NATASHA webisode series beyond the Internet. Twenty original animated short cartoons developed for the KOL kids service by Animation Collective, an independent animation house, will be available on television later this year, marking one of the first online children's animated properties to make this transition.

HBO & New Line Acquire Newmarket

Time Warner sister companies HBO and New Line Cinema have acquired independent distributor Newmarket Films and hired its chief, Bob Berney, to run a new venture, reports REUTERS. Newmarket is best know for taking the risk in releasing Mel Gibsons THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, which earned more than $350 million at domestic box offices via grass-roots marketing aimed at religious groups. Other big releases for Newmarket included WHALE RIDER and MONSTER.

Warner Bros. has agreed to produce M. Night Shyamalans next fantasy thriller LADY IN THE WATER, the trades report. THE VILLAGE filmmaker will write and direct as well as produce along with Blinding Edge Pictures Sam Mercer. All of the thrill masters pics since THE SIXTH SENSE have been made with Walt Disney, however both parties past on working on LADY together.

Sony Launches PSP in North America

The long anticipated North American launch of Sonys PSP (PlayStation Portable) has arrived. Sony shipped one million units of its $250 handheld gaming, movie and music player, but expects expect those to sell out quickly.

"We expect to see a sellout within the first week," said Andrew House, evp of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said to CNN. "The early indications were that pre-orders were very high. But, we have a very good product flow... into April and beyond. Production started at 150,000 units a month and we're ramping up to double that very quickly."

Vinton CEO Farnath Leaves

With contract negotiations coming to an impasse with company owner and board chairman Phil Knight, Jeff Farnath, ceo of Vinton Studios, will be leaving the Portland, Ore.-based animation house. Bob Harold, a Vinton board member and 18-year Nike Inc. finance exec, will act as interim CEO until Farnath can find a permanent replacement. Farnath will remain under contract with the house as a consultant.

Liguori New President, Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting

Quick on the heels of the news earlier this week that Fox Broadcasting Co. entertainment chief Gail Berman ankled her post at the network to become a top creative player at Paramount Pictures, comes the announcement that Peter Liguori has been named to replace her as president, entertainment. Liguori will be responsible for all FOX program development and scheduling, as well as marketing, business affairs and promotions.

Hulbert to Head Hallmark International Channel Network

Ex-Disney TV Intl chief David Hulbert has found a lovely new home to head as chief exec of Hallmark International Channel network. The network itself is taking up a new home with Sparrowhawk, the media group that is in the process with Providence Equity Partners and 3i of buying the Hallmark Intl Channel from Crown Media Holdings.

The Hallmark International Channel network has more than 60 million subscribers worldwide, the international rights to more than 580 titles in the Crown Media library and a state-of-the-art broadcast facility in Denver, Colorado.

Vanguard’s Valiant to Fly in August

In the latest jostling for prime release dates, Disney has pushed back Vanguard Animations VALIANT, the U.K.s first 3D-animated feature, from April 15 to Aug. 19, 2005. Vanguards debut feature, produced at the revitalized Ealing Studios, bowed March 25 in the U.K. With Disneys own CHICKEN LITTLE now flying the coop Nov. 4, this highly anticipated story of a World War II carrier pigeon should fill the bill nicely.

Warner Bros. Pictures Signs Feature Deal With NeoPets

Warner Bros. Pictures has entered into an agreement with NeoPets Inc. to develop and produce animated feature films based on new stories and characters from the virtual world of Neopets.com, the world's leading online youth community.

Dylan Sellers will produce the projects with Doug Dohring, chairman/ceo of, NeoPets. Warner Bros. Pictures' Aditya Sood will oversee production for the studio. NeoPets will co-finance development.

DC Comics’ Zatanna Gets Feature

Writer Hadley Davis is drafting the script for a teen movie adaptation of Zatanna, the DC Comics sorceress, reports SCI FI WIRE.

"It's sort of an obscure DC Comic book," Davis said in an interview. "Well, I say that, and then people who know comic books know the comic. It has existed for years and years, but she is a female magician. It's for Warner Bros. and [producer] Denise DiNovi, and we've made her sort of a teen magician."

Pixar Declares Two-for-One Split

Pixar Animation Studios announced today that its board of directors has approved a two-for-one split of the company's common stock and the number of outstanding shares will jump from 100 million to 200 million.

At the close of trading on April 4, 2005, shareholders of record will receive one additional share of Pixar for every outstanding share held on the record date. Trading will begin on a split-adjusted basis on April 19.

Unexpectedly, Fox Broadcasting Co. entertainment president Gail Berman will ankle her post at network to become a top creative player at Paramount Pictures under newly appointed chairman/ceo Brad Grey, reports the trades. The details of her new post have not been released.

In a statement, the studio said, "Paramount Pictures is in discussions with Gail Berman for a senior creative role at the studio. We hope to conclude the discussions shortly."

Escape Studios & Post Houses Team Up

CG training facility Escape Studios has joined forces with some of the U.K.'s biggest post-production facilities to develop a course that will provide the houses with new talent. Cinesite, Double Negative, Framestore CFC, Glassworks, the Mill and The Moving Picture Company (MPC) have been working closely with Escape to develop an intensive seven-month program called the VFX | Production Grade. The course comprises five months of full-time training along with a two-month work placement.

Oscar-nominee THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE won the Best Film prize at the 25th Genie Awards, Canada's top film award, which was held on March 21, 2005, in Toronto.

Seamless visual effects drama HEAD IN THE CLOUDS, starring Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz and Stuart Townsend, directed by John Duigan, took home the most awards for the categories of editing, costume, score and cinematography.
