The 41st Monte Carlo Television Festival is set up to highlight the best in television from around the world. In conjunction, the 23rd Market of Television will gather over 2000 participants for more than 70 countries. The market will feature debates and round-table discussions of various topical subjects.

Bill Plympton has updated his appearances page. In the upcoming months, "Mutant Aliens" and Bill's other films will be appearing in various festivals and other events, including the Boston Underground Festival, Massachusetts, February 20-27; Festival Du Dessin Anime, Brussels, Belgium, February 21-March 3; New York Underground Festival, New York, March 7-13; Images Du Nouveau Monde, Quebec, March 7-11; SXSW Festival, Austin, Texas, March 12-20; and CineAmbigu, Barcelona, Spain, in April.

Curious Pictures Signs Special Effects Director Noble Jones

Curious Pictures has announced it has signed Noble Jones as a live-action/special effects director. Noble is renowned for his work directing commercials in far off places like South Africa and Switzerland for such clients as AT&T, Coca-Cola, MTV and Toyota. His music video for Wide Mouth Mason won awards for Best Cinematography at the Much Music Awards. "We have been aware of Noble for years," said Richard Winkler, executive producer, Curious Pictures. "His work took a quantum leap in the last year or so and the timing was right for both of us.

In this newly created position, Welter will head the companys international corporate development efforts in addition to overseeing all aspects of international sales for the company including distribution, licensing and merchandising. Chuck Gammage Toons Island Adventure For Kellogg's

With Chuck Gammage Animation handling the traditional animation and TOPIX/Mad Dog taking on the 3D, a new spot for Kellogg's Island Adventure campaign in the U.K. has Uder the Cow bringing excitement to breakfast. The spot introduces Kellogg's new Corn Flakes Cereal and Chocolate Milk Bars. In the 2D spot, Uder armed with a chocolate milk gun takes aim at boxes of Corn Flakes falling from the sky, turning them into Corn Flakes Cereal and Chocolate Milk Bars. Director Chuck Gammage oversaw the production of the entire spot.

ILM Says Whassup To Alien Budweiser Spot

ILM created the new Super Bowl spot for Budweiser that has aliens saying, "Whassup!" The spot opens with a dog walking into a country field and is then beamed up into an alien spacecraft. After the head alien asks the dog what he has learned on Earth, the dog unzips and out pops an alien who yells, "Whassup!" The animation was done using Softimage with facial and lip-synchs done with ILM's in-house software Caricature. Modeling was done in Maya and Alias|Wavefront, with rendering handled in RenderMan and compositing in ILM's in-house software CompTime.

Cartoon Movie: Where European Animation Feature Deals Get Done

Cartoon Movie (March 15-17, 2001, Potsdam-Babelsberg, Germany) is the European market for animation feature film. The annual event is put together by the AEFA Cartoon (European Association for Animated Films), which has been organizing every year since 1990 the Cartoon Forum, the co-production marketplace for TV animation. Cartoon Movie gives European feature film producers the chance to meet and exchange ideas, even create co-production partnerships.

The American Cinematheque and the World Animation Festival are sponsoring a screening of Czech animator Karel Zeman's work. Zeman's work as an animator and special effects artist stretched from the 1940s to the 1960s. He worked on such films as THE FABULOUS WORLD OF JULES VERNE (1958) and BARON MUNCHAUSEN (1961).

The Second Annual International Festival of Time-Based Media is being presented by the University of Southern California School of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the Santa Monica Museum of Art. The festival will take place on both the USC Campus, Los Angeles and at the SMMoA, Santa Monica. Art In Motion is organized around a central theme, and the only criteria for submission is that works be "time-based." This year's theme is "The Vanishing Author?" an exploration of the changing view of whom is "The Author" of modern artwork. Entries may address the festival theme directly or indirectly.
