FX Orders an Animated Archer

Cable network FX has ordered six episodes of half-hour animated comedy ARCHER, per VARIETY.

The show, still in the working title stage, is from Adam Reed and is about the employees of an international spy agency. ARCHER is set to launch in the fall and is a likely companion to FX's cult fave comedy IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA.

Chris Parnell, Aisha Tyler, Judy Greer and Jessica Walter are part of the voice cast, as is Jon Benjamin of FAMILY GUY.

MPC Completes VFX for SyFy's House of Imagination

House of Imagination, 4Creative's eagerly awaited new brand film for Syfy, will be premiered in the US today as part of SCI FI's brand evolution to Syfy on Tuesday, July 7. Visual Effects and the interactive web campaign were carried out at MPC.

The two minute brand film was conceived, directed and produced by 4Creative, Channel 4's creative resource, who in the last month have picked up a Bafta, a D&AD pencil and two Cannes Lions.

Hong Kong Phooey to Get Live-Action Take

Alcon Ent. is moving forward with a live-action/animated take on HONG KONG PHOOEY, per VARIETY, with Alex Zamm to direct David A. Goodman's script.

Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove of Alcon will produce with Brett Ratner and Jay Stern. Goodman is an exec producer of FAMILY GUY.

PHOOEY was a 1970s Hanna-Barbera animated TV series about a police station janitor who becomes a dog with mystical powers.

Disney Bringing Back Alligator Manners

Disney Channel will premiere the second season of the popular Playhouse Disney short-form animated series, "Can You Teach My Alligator Manners?," with 10 new episodes airing Saturday, August 22 (6:25 a.m. - 10:55 a.m. ET/PT). This season has Mikey helping his pet alligator, Al, learn about using proper manners in a number of new situations, including at family meals, at the supermarket and on an airplane trip.

Giant Prehistoric Birds to Get Day at the Movies

Don Murphy and John Wells have optioned the rights to novel THE FLOCK by James Robert Smith, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Murphy will produce with Angryfilms partner Susan Montford and Wells is producing with his company's president, Claire Polstein. Murphy is a producer on TRANSFORMERS 2. He discovered Smith via blog comments. Murphy was perusing the blog of FROM HELL artist Eddie Campbell, and Smith was posting critical comments of the film, of which Murphy was producer. Murphy discovered Smith had written a book, so he ordered it and greatly enjoyed it, to his surprise.

VHS Pioneer Richard F. O'Brion Dies

Richard F. O'Brion, 89, of Wyckoff, N.J., died on Wednesday, July 8, 2009. Industry veterans affectionately knew him as "The Pope." He retired as an Executive Vice President for JVC Corporation of America, in charge of the company's entire U.S. operations, and was one of the key individuals in introducing the VHS format. He was also identified with the early days of Sony's broadcast and professional business. Dick also worked for Ampex and Allan Dumont Laboratories during his career.

Marvel Studios announced today that Academy Award nominated actress Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the studio's highly anticipated movie THOR. In the early "Thor" comics, Jane Foster was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film.
