The Lorax Gets 3-D Animated Treatment

Dr. Seuss' environmentally-themed THE LORAX is set to become a 3-D animated feature from Illumination Ent. and Universal Pictures, reports VARIETY.

Chris Renaud and Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio will direct from a script by Paul & Daurio. The film is set for a March 2, 2012 release, the birthday of Theodor Geisel, who died in 1991.

THE LORAX is narrated by a greedy entrepreneur, who, despite warnings from the tree-loving Lorax, cuts down a forest of Truffula trees to make clothing, destroying the ecosystem and forcing the animals to leave.

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER that a sequel to MONSTERS VS. ALIENS is questionable after a so-so international performance.

DreamWorks presented their second quarter earnings on Tuesday, reporting a 7 percent drop in net income compared with a year ago. MVA has grossed $377 million worldwide so far, with $198 million of that coming from the U.S.

Sony Gets an Infamous Video Game

Sony Pictures has picked up a pitch from screenwriter Sheldon Turner to adapt Sucker Punch videogame inFAMOUS into a feature film, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

The deal, in the seven figures, is still being process with Sony's sister company Sony Computer Ent., which publishes the game. Avi Arad and Ari Arad will produce. Sony execs Matt Tolmach and Jonathan Kadin are overseeing for the studio.

Paul W.S. Anderson and producing partner Jeremy Bolt (RESIDENT EVIL franchise) have purchased the film rights to fantasy novel THE WARDED MAN from Peter V. Brett, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Anderson is attached to direct and produce along with Bolt. Stephanie Johnson will exec produce, after bringing the novel to the duo's attention. Anderson and Bolt got the rights via their respective production companies: Tannhauser Gate and Bolt Pictures.

THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE director Robert Schwentke is in negotiations to helm Summit Ent's spy thriller RED, starring Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Based on the Wild Storm/DC Comic, the script was written by Erich and Jon Hoeber. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing.

The story follows a former black-ops agent forced out of retirement when an assassin threatens him and his girlfriend.
