BKN Signs Stone Age Contract

BKN has announced tthat its Spanish subsidiary BKN New Media SL has signed an agreement worth 1.3 million euros with Cartoon One S.r.l. in Italy for the co-production of STONE AGE (52x11). In return for the rights to the Italian market and a profit participation in the property, Cartoon has agreed to the non-refundable payment, which represents 25% of the production budget. The property will be co-produced with BKN's all-digital and high definition studios in London and Barcelona and Cartoon's studio in Rome.

Disney Channel Invests in U.K. Production

Disney Channel Worldwide's Global Original Programming Division today announced deals to develop two new children's television shows in the U.K. with production companies Coolabi and Blue-Zoo Productions. The deals are the first to be announced by Disney Channel's London-based Global Original Programming hub, established in April 2007 to drive forward the investment in and development of live action and animation outside of North America, for both European and global distribution.

Titan Gets The Spirit

Titan Books has acquired worldwide rights to a deluxe making-of book for the Lionsgate and Odd Lot Ent. production of Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT. Featuring interviews with the cast and crew, color photos, storyboards and production art, plus the full screenplay, the book is slated for publication Dec. 2008, ahead of the movie's release on Jan 16, 2009.

Nick Promotes Dexter to EVP

Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group has promoted Alison Dexter to EVP of Production, responsible for all television production for Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, Noggin, Nicktoons Network and The N.

Tribe Pictures will host the 41st International Quorum of Motion Picture Producers Conference. Producers representing more than 40 countries and six continents will come together to exchange ideas, form partnerships and explore the latest trends and newest innovations in global film and video production. The theme of this year's event, "Show Me the Money," is intended to underscore the importance of creative dialogue and idea sharing to the international production community.

Grasshorse Goes East

Los Angeles-based Grasshorse Technologies, Inc. announced its decision today to relocate and expand its services to the state of Iowa. The production company's decision comes in response to recent legislation providing tax incentives to attract the film industry, job diversity, and talent to the state.

"The Iowa Film, Television and Video Project Promotion Program (IFTVP) has created fertile ground for companies to relocate to Iowa. It lays the foundation for a very exciting and burgeoning industry," stated Stephen Jennings, co-president and founder of Grasshorse.

New Canadian Animation Studio Formed

Toronto-based independent production houses Rocket Science Visual Effects and Screen Door have joined forces to create Fandango Animation, reports KIDSCREEN. Former Nelvana exec and industry veteran Heather Walker will be Fandango's lead production executive, charged with shepherding the company's first slate of projects into production in both traditional and new media platforms. With a number of shows already in development, Fandango is currently looking for co-production partners.

Wolverine Spin-Off Gets Date, Title & Villain

May 1, 2009 has been selected as the release date for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, reports VARIETY. The 20th Century Fox production, directed by Gavin Hood, will star Hugh Jackman as the clawed mutant. Liev Schreiber is in negotiations to play villain William Stryker, which was a role originated in X2 by Brian Cox.

Flying Bark Productions PTY. Ltd., a 100 percent subsidiary of Munich-based EM.Entertainment GmbH, has extended the contract of Managing Director Michael Hefferon. Studio B Walks Dogs and Kats to MIPCOM

Studio B Productions has signed a production order for 26 episodes of KID VS. KAT, a 26x22 comedy series for kids 6-11 about the exaggerated conflict between a demonically malevolent cat and the beleaguered ten-year-old boy who has become its unwitting nemesis. The property was developed internally at Studio B and originated from a short titled LOOK WHAT MY SISTER DRAGGED IN that screened at MIPCOM Jr. in 2006. The series is currently in production with YTV for a Fall 2008 launch.

Italy-based publishing and production company Atlantyca Ent. has appointed entertainment production and development exec Karen K. Miller to oversee its U.S.-based animation production operations. Based in Los Angeles, Miller will work with Italy based executives, Chairman Pietro Marietti and Senior Manager/Exec Producer Caterina Vacchi.

Polanski Passes on Pompeii

Roman Polanski is stepping down as the director of the screen adaptation of Robert Harris' novel, POMPEII, reports SCREEN DAILY. The move is due to producer Summit International's need to push the start date indefinitely on the massive production. The production had been set to begin next summer in Europe, but fears of an industry strike spurred producers Robert Benmussa and Alain Sarde to postpone the start of filming. The producers are pre-selling the project and have begun looking for a new director.

Creative Differences Spur Showrunner To Exit Bionic

BIONIC WOMAN showrunner Glen Morgan has left the new NBC production, VARIETY reports. The trade pub states that creative differences were the reason for the former X-FILES showrunner to ankle the fledgling series.

David Eick is now the sole showrunner on the sci-fi production. Jason Smilovic is the exec producer.

The network made a statement congratulating Morgan for helping build a foundation for the series, which debuts later this month.

Futz! a Wrap for 9 Story Ent.

9 Story Ent. has announced that production has been completed on the first 26 episodes of its new animated comedy series FUTZ! The Teletoon Original Production is scheduled to premiere as part of the network's new fall programming lineup in September.

Targeting nine- to14-year-olds, the wacky comedy is a retro nonverbal cartoon based on the misadventures of its title character, who is ready for anything, prepared for nothing and always able to severely mess things up in just 180 seconds -- the length of each episode.

Pilar Flynn Joins Astro Boy as Assoc Producer

Pilar Flynn has been named Associate Producer on Imagi's ASTRO BOY, it was announced today by Cecil Kramer, Executive VP of Production. Flynn began her animation career at DreamWorks where she worked for eight years on the development and production of such films as THE ROAD TO EL DORADO, SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS, SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON, MADAGASCAR and FLUSHED AWAY. She also coproduced DreamWorks' first CG-animated short, the multiple-award-winning FIRST FLIGHT. Most recently Flynn served as associate producer of the animated feature film MEAN MARGARET for Starz Media.

Johnson Moves Up to EVP at Universal

Bret Johnson has been promoted to EVP, physical production at Universal Pictures, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Johnson, who has held various posts at Universal since joining the studio in 1988, will continue to work with filmmakers on all aspects of physical production, including scheduling, budgeting, hiring crews and managing day-to-day production.
