Hulbert to Head Hallmark International Channel Network

Ex-Disney TV Intl chief David Hulbert has found a lovely new home to head as chief exec of Hallmark International Channel network. The network itself is taking up a new home with Sparrowhawk, the media group that is in the process with Providence Equity Partners and 3i of buying the Hallmark Intl Channel from Crown Media Holdings.

The Hallmark International Channel network has more than 60 million subscribers worldwide, the international rights to more than 580 titles in the Crown Media library and a state-of-the-art broadcast facility in Denver, Colorado.

Vanguard’s Valiant to Fly in August

In the latest jostling for prime release dates, Disney has pushed back Vanguard Animations VALIANT, the U.K.s first 3D-animated feature, from April 15 to Aug. 19, 2005. Vanguards debut feature, produced at the revitalized Ealing Studios, bowed March 25 in the U.K. With Disneys own CHICKEN LITTLE now flying the coop Nov. 4, this highly anticipated story of a World War II carrier pigeon should fill the bill nicely.

In order to unify its overall branding strategy, Autodesk has renamed Discreet to Autodesk Media and Ent. The division best known for 3ds max and other digital imaging software will continue to service the film, video, gaming and related media and entertainment markets.

This renaming ensures that the creative toolset from Autodesk Media and Ent. will stay on the leading edge of product innovation. Additionally, Autodesk Consulting is extending its organization by adding a dedicated media and entertainment division.

Warner Bros. Pictures Signs Feature Deal With NeoPets

Warner Bros. Pictures has entered into an agreement with NeoPets Inc. to develop and produce animated feature films based on new stories and characters from the virtual world of Neopets.com, the world's leading online youth community.

Dylan Sellers will produce the projects with Doug Dohring, chairman/ceo of, NeoPets. Warner Bros. Pictures' Aditya Sood will oversee production for the studio. NeoPets will co-finance development.

DC Comics’ Zatanna Gets Feature

Writer Hadley Davis is drafting the script for a teen movie adaptation of Zatanna, the DC Comics sorceress, reports SCI FI WIRE.

"It's sort of an obscure DC Comic book," Davis said in an interview. "Well, I say that, and then people who know comic books know the comic. It has existed for years and years, but she is a female magician. It's for Warner Bros. and [producer] Denise DiNovi, and we've made her sort of a teen magician."

Pixar/Disney Characters Arrive at McDonald’s

Animated heroes from the collection of Pixar films presented by Disney are bringing action and adventure to McDonald's restaurants nationwide in support of the recent release of THE INCREDIBLES DVD. Running until April 14, 2005, with the purchase of a Happy Meal or a Mighty Kids Meal, guests will receive one of eight retail-size action figures from various films. The Disney Presents Pixar Pals McDonald's Happy Meal lineup includes Mr. Incredible and Dash from the Academy Award-winning THE INCREDIBLES; Nemo and Dory from the Academy Award-winning FINDING NEMO; Mike Wazowski and James P.

Pixar Declares Two-for-One Split

Pixar Animation Studios announced today that its board of directors has approved a two-for-one split of the company's common stock and the number of outstanding shares will jump from 100 million to 200 million.

At the close of trading on April 4, 2005, shareholders of record will receive one additional share of Pixar for every outstanding share held on the record date. Trading will begin on a split-adjusted basis on April 19.

Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) has promoted Catherine Powell to sales director, U.K. & Ireland. She will be responsible for leading the U.K. free and pay TV distribution of BVITV s portfolio of entertainment, which includes drama and comedy network series such as DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and LOST, Disney branded kids content, movies (such as the upcoming THE HITCHHIKER S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY) and ABC News programming. BVITV also services the distribution of the Jetix portfolio of programming.

Fox Filmed Entertainment (FFE) has promoted Matthew Glotzer to the newly created post of vp, digital media, responsible for developing content distribution opportunities across a wide range of new and emerging technology platforms, as well as actively pursuing long-term initiatives with major IT, consumer electronics and telecommunications companies. He reports to digital media president, Peter Levinsohn and will work closely with the Fox Filmed Ent. Groups strategic planning, engineering, content protection and distribution groups.

Fox TV’s Berman Leaving for Paramount

Unexpectedly, Fox Broadcasting Co. entertainment president Gail Berman will ankle her post at network to become a top creative player at Paramount Pictures under newly appointed chairman/ceo Brad Grey, reports the trades. The details of her new post have not been released.

In a statement, the studio said, "Paramount Pictures is in discussions with Gail Berman for a senior creative role at the studio. We hope to conclude the discussions shortly."

Escape Studios & Post Houses Team Up

CG training facility Escape Studios has joined forces with some of the U.K.'s biggest post-production facilities to develop a course that will provide the houses with new talent. Cinesite, Double Negative, Framestore CFC, Glassworks, the Mill and The Moving Picture Company (MPC) have been working closely with Escape to develop an intensive seven-month program called the VFX | Production Grade. The course comprises five months of full-time training along with a two-month work placement.

Triplets of Belleville Wins Top Genie Award

Oscar-nominee THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE won the Best Film prize at the 25th Genie Awards, Canada's top film award, which was held on March 21, 2005, in Toronto.

Seamless visual effects drama HEAD IN THE CLOUDS, starring Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz and Stuart Townsend, directed by John Duigan, took home the most awards for the categories of editing, costume, score and cinematography.

In the animation front, Chris Landreths Oscar winner RYAN won for animated short.

Sideways Star Swings into Spidey 3

Thomas Haden Church, who was most recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in SIDEWAYS, has been cast as Spider-Man's new adversary in SPIDER-MAN 3. The announcement was made by Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad, however the identity of the villain Church will play is being kept secret. Production is set to begin early next year with the film to be released on May 4, 2007.

Alien vs. Predator Helmer to Tackle Deathrace 2000 Remake

Paramount has signed ALIEN VS. PREDATOR director Paul W.S. Anderson to write and helm a remake of Roger Cormans cult adventure, DEATHRACE 2000, reports VARIETY. In addition, Anderson will produce along with Corman, C/W partners Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner, and Impact Pictures partner Jeremy Bolt.

The original featured a race where drivers accumulated points for running over pedestrians. The new version will be "set in 2020, ours is an ultraviolent, no-holds-barred race with heavily armed Escalades, Ferraris and Aston Martins," Anderson said.

British Director Confirmed as X3 Helmer

20th Century Fox has confirmed rumors that British helmer Matthew Vaughn has been hired to direct X-MEN 3, reports HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Avi Arad, Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter will produce. Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg have written the script. Hugh Jackman has already signed on to reprise his role as Wolverine and the studio is in talks with Ian McKellen, Halle Berry and Patrick Stewart. The film is expected to start lensing in mid-July and will hit theaters May 26, 2006.

Lions Gate Starts Up 3D FOODFIGHT! With Threshold

Formed less than a month ago, Lions Gate Family Entertainment has announced it will co-produce FOODFIGHT!, the 3D animated film from Larry Kasanoff's Threshold Animation Studios, slated for a fall 2006 release.

Currently in production, FOODFIGHT! takes place in a supermarket that comes to life when the customers and employees have gone home. Some of the stars cast to provide voices are sisters Hilary and Haylie Duff, who are starring together in the upcoming MATERIAL GIRLS.
