TechTV Announces Anime Unleashed

TechTV, a cable network dedicated to all things technology, recently launched ANIME UNLEASHED, a program block devoted to screening anime feature films and series, some never before seen on television in the U.S. ANIME UNLEASHED premiered December 30, 2002 with the series debut of CREST OF STARS, which follows a human boy whose life changes forever when an alien race invades his home planet, and currently airs nightly at 1:00 am EST. "ANIME UNLEASHED is a natural extension to our programming mix," said Greg Brannan, senior vice president of programming and production for TechTV.

Anime Network Unveils Format Details

Anime producer and distributor ADV Films is readying the launch of The Anime Network, with a mid-December launch as part of Comcast Cable's video-on-demand (VOD) initiative in the Philadelphia area. Comcast's VOD service is available to approximately 1.2 million customers in the Philadelphia area. The move will be phase one of the rollout of the network, which is the first television channel in North America dedicated to anime and anime-related content. Leadership at The Anime Network described the decision to launch phase one via VOD service as one of complementary strengths.

Cartoon Network Swims With Anime Acquisitions

Cartoon Network is expanding the range of its popular Adult Swim block with the acquisition of three anime series: LUPIN THE THIRD, REIGN and TRIGUN. LUPIN THE THIRD follows the adventures of globetrotting crook Lupin, who is aided in his adventures by his two partners, expert marksman Jigen and samurai master Goemon. Lupin travels around the world stealing extraordinary treasures and matching wits with rival thief, Fujiko, all the while staying one step ahead of Inspector Zenigata.

Big Apple Anime Fest Hosts Premiere Screenings This Weekend In New York City.

The Big Apple Anime Fest 2002 (BAAF 2002) will present the exclusive sneak preview of DreamWorks' recently acquired anime feature MILLENNIUM ACTRESS, this Saturday, August 31, 2002 at 7:30 pm. The screening will be introduced by Taro Maki, the film's producer, who will also be hosting a question and answer session directly following the feature. The festival will also premiere the English dubbed version of COWBOY BEBOP: THE MOVIE on Friday, August 30, 2002 at 8:00 pm (this screening is unfortunately sold out!).

Anime Film The Voices Of A Distant Star Acquired For DVD Release

Anime and manga distributor ADV Films has acquired the short anime film THE VOICES OF A DISTANT STAR and plans a DVD-only release for the title. Using a mix of traditional and computer animation, the film was written, directed, edited and animated by Makoto Shinkai using a Power Macintosh 7600/120 computer and several consumer and professional-level design and animation software programs. Shinkai recently won the award for "Most Valuable Newcomer" at the 2002 Tokyo Anime Fair.

Anime Series Highlight Fox Kids UK’S Fall 2002 Line-Up

Fox Kids UK has announced the line-up for its new season of programming and it includes several UK television premieres and a second season of the battling robots show MEDABOTS, which is currently one of Fox Kids UK's top-rated shows. Among the UK premieres are the anime series SHIN CHAN, acquired from TV Asahi, and PIG CITY, a Cinegroupe production that features the adventures of a country bumpkin pig in the big city.

Viz Communications And Shueisha To Launch Manga Magazine

U.S. producer of anime and manga Viz Communications, Inc. has partnered with manga publisher Shueisha Inc. to launch a new mass-market boys' magazine. Viz currently produces Japanese animation and comics in English with over 20 monthly titles. The new monthly magazine, to be launched in November 2002, will be patterned after Shueisha's magazine SHONEN JUMP and will feature the manga from which many of the world's most popular anime properties such as DRAGON BALL Z and YU-GI-OH were derived. "U.S. kids know all about anime due to exposure on television," said Yamaji.

Director Yoshiyuki Tomino To Appear At BAAF

The Big Apple Anime Festival (BAAF) will host anime director Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of the GUNDAM saga, as a guest of honor at BAAF 2002. Tomino will be appearing at BAAF 2002 and the Anime Expo NY, both held in Times Square, August 30 - September 2, 2002. Yoshiyuki Tomino's CHAR'S COUNTER ATTACK will be one of the featured films to be screened at the festival. There will also be a panel discussion on Tomino's works and he will make a special guest appearance at the Times Square Virgin Megastore where he will greet fans and sign autographs.
