Anime Voice Actor Dean Turner Passes Away

Actor Dean Turner, who voiced many English dubs of anime series, died Dec. 28, 2006, at Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center in Hawaii, reports BCDB.COM. He was 84. Turner died of respiratory failure after fighting diabetes for several years, said his partner of 40 years, actor Richard Pellett.

Turner voiced Lee and the Secretary Of Commerce in GASARAKI (1998), the Department Chief in HEPPOKO [SILLY] ANIMATION EXCEL SAGA (QUACK EXPERIMENTAL ANIME EXCEL SAGA) (1999), the Maitre D in A.D. POLICE: TO PROTECT AND SERVE (1999), and a driver and council member in NOIR (2001).

New Book Explores Emerging Worlds of Anime and Manga

From the University of Minnesota Press for $19.95, MECHADEMIA, a new annual edited by Frenchy Lunning, begins a conversation among scholars, critics and fans about the complexity of art forms like Superflat, manga and anime. Since the release of Anime Studio 5 earlier in the fall, e frontier America Inc. has seen impressive sales of its 2D animation and cartoon creation software. Anime Studio was previously known as Moho.

Anime Studio utilizes a "bone rigging" system normally found only in 3D graphics software that streamlines the animation workflow and reduces production time. Manipulation and drawing tools can be used with digital photos to create cut out animations similar to JibJab Media and SouthParkStudios.com.

Anime USA 2006

Anime USA is an annual Japanese animation and culture convention in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C.

This year, Anime USA is hosting an Original Animation Contest. It is looking for original works of one-five minutes length in all animation formats: traditional, CG, stop-motion and so forth. First place prize is $500, second place is $300, third place is $100. All submissions will be shown at the convention. Applicants need not be present to submit or to win.

The third International Manga and Anime Competition and Festival 2006 has been launched in the UK. The festival takes place at the magnificent London County Hall from Friday 10th to Tuesday 14th November 2006.

The Manga and Anime competition has been launched on the IMAF website and with a prize fund worth $85,000 and cash prize fund of $75,000 - it's a must for all professional and amateur illustrators, animators and promo producers.

Festival favourites like cosplay, gaming, premieres and high profile guest speakers, will also be available for all to enjoy.

Anime In The Limelight Returns to Toon Radio

Anime in the Limelight (AitL), the anime radio show, along and its legendary host, Max returns from its long hiatus with new and classic episodes on Oct. 7, 2006,

Las Vegas-based Limelight Prods., the producers of the world-famous show that went off the air in 2004, will start making episodes sometime early in 2007. Until then, classic episodes will air in rotation, with news one inserted as they are ready. AitL will run in its old timeslot of 6:00 pm on Saturdays. No word yet on the status of the AitL archive service.

FUNimation Doubles Programming for Anime Block

FUNimation Ent., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navarre Corp, has doubled the content on its syndicated anime block to four hours. CoLours TV Network, available nationwide as part of DISH Network's basic satellite TV package, is the first broadcaster to pick up the extended block. The new block covers key primetime programming slots and launched on Sept. 11, 2006.
