Look Effects Hosts VFX Roundtable: Keeping Work in L.A.

Look Effects hosted the first annual VFX roundtable on Sept. 28 at its El Capitan headquarters in Hollywood.

The event attracted a number of top-tier industry professionals, including studio department heads, post-production and vfx supervisors, tax and legal specialists, and representatives from the office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the California Film Commission, and the Visual Effects Society.

When Aardman Animations received copies of Lewi Firth Boltons stop-motion film, they were so impressed they offered him a job, however, what the Oscar-winning studio didnt know was that Bolton is only 14 years old. BBC NEWS recently reported the story of the talent young filmmaker from Bridlington, U.K., who took up stop-motion animation three years ago after seeing Aardmans WALLACE AND GROMIT shorts.

Missouri Library Pulls Graphic Novel “Porn” from Shelves

In Marshall, Missouri, the Marshall Public Library has removed two graphic novels FUN HOME by Alison Bechdel and BLANKETS by Craig Thompson from circulation, reports the DEMOCRAT-NEWS. The graphic novels will remain off the shelves until the library board drafts a new policy regarding graphic novels after looking into what other libraries throughout the state have done in this arena, said board president Anita Wright.

TOKYOPOP To Produce First Live-Action Feature Film, Lament Of The Lamb

Right on the heels of acquiring worldwide film rights to the hit manga series, LAMENT OF THE LAMB, TOKYOPOP has chosen the property to launch the company's first foray into independent film production.

Created by Kei Toume and originally published in Japan by Gentosha, LAMENT OF THE LAMB follows the physical and mental torment of a man who discovers that he is cursed with a hereditary disease that makes him crave blood.

Stu Levy, TOKYOPOP ceo/cco, is producing the film.

NBC Creates CG Slideshow of NYC Plane Crash

NBC 5 Chicago has put up on its website a CG still slideshow of the flight path of the plane, which crashed into a condo complex in New York City on Oct. 11, 2006.

The slide show can be viewed at http://www.nbc5.com/slideshow/news/10068810/detail.html?rss=chi&psp=news.

The two occupants of the small 545 Cirrus SR20 plane Yankees baseball pitcher Cory Lidle and Tyler Stanger, a 26-year-old flight instructor from California were the only people killed in the accident.

Austin’s D7 Studios Releases Animated Series Free Online at D7.Com

Austin-based D7 Studios, an independent animation company that completed the first-ever animated Coca-Cola/NASCAR commercial for the Daytona 500 in 2005, is releasing the first chapter of its new animated show, D7PEACEMAKER REVELATION, in hi-def for download, and broadcast on the Web for free in a scaled-down version at www.D7.com.

Created independently, the series features an anime style with an American plot. Written, directed, and animated solely by Arik Renee Avila, the series is produced by Tony Hobdy and Robin Bookwalter.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has exercised a right to force DreamWorks Animation to sell about 14 million shares to the public in a secondary offering following the Nov. 3 release of FLUSHED AWAY, reports BLOOMBERG NEWS.

The complicated move would not only dissolve Allens partnership with Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, but also allow the Microsoft co-founder to benefit from the stock sale in the long run if the shares sell at a low price now.

Artist-owned-and-operated visual effects studio Brickyard VFX has wrapped a :30 spot for Timberland via Arnold Worldwide, Boston. The spot, shot and directed by The Cronenweths on a sunny day was turned into a stormy afternoon with the help of Brickyard's talented effects and CGI teams. Broadcast and cinema versions of the spot break nationally on Oct. 24.

MIPCOM announces the winners of the Mobile TV Screening & Awards 2006. The international trophies were awarded on Oct. 11, 2006, in a packed auditorium at the 22nd edition of MIPCOM. The winning titles were chosen by an international grand jury from a total of 23 nominated projects.

Sponsored by Orange, Ericsson and the Korean Broadcasting Commission, the Mobile Screenings & Awards 2006 call-for-entries opened as of July this year and brought in a record number of 290 entries from 34 countries, a 30% increase in submissions from 2005.

Animated Dreadful Children Coming to Fox

FOX has given the go-ahead on a pilot for a new primetime animated series titled TWO DREADFUL CHILDREN, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The comedy was created by KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL creator/exec producer Dave Hemingson.

The 20th Century Fox TV production centers on a redneck family that learn that their two unruly fraternal twins are geniuses. Hemingson will write and exec produce.

FOX hopes to add the series to its Sunday night animation block that includes THE SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY and AMERICAN DAD.

Yanick Dusseault, one of the most accomplished visual effects digital matte artists working today, has joined ElementFX as its art director. ElementFX is a digital post-production studio.

Dargaud Distribution Acquires Rights To Naruto

Dargaud Distribution has signed a major deal with Japanese broadcaster TV Tokyo to acquire television, video and merchandising rights to Naruto for French and Dutch-speaking speaking territories in Europe.

The 104x26 series is a co-production between TV Tokyo, leading Japanese animation studio Pierrot and Shueisha, publisher of the original manga. Dargaud Distributions parent company Group Dargaud already publishes the NARUTO comic books through its subsidiary Kana in France and it holds the #1 spot of all comic books sold.

Conan Spawns Pale Force Web Series

Due the their popularity on NBC's LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIEN, comedian Jim Gaffigans PALE FORCE will be turned into a Web series, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The first episode airs on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, and went live online the next day on NBC.com.

Gaffigan superhero satire was originally launched in Sept. 2005. The toons chronicle the misadventures of muscular Pale Man and his skinny sidekick, Conan O'Brien, as they use their paleness to fight crime.

In anticipation for the debut of the latest half-hour SPONGEBOB special titled BEST DAY EVER, Nickelodeon will air a 45-episode marathon of fans favorite episodes of the positive poriferan. Beginning on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at 8:00 pm, the marathon will close with the debut of the special on Friday, Nov. 10, at 8:00 pm.

Voice of SpongeBob, Tom Kenny, as his Patchy the Pirate character, will host the marathon. To fan viewer interest, Nick will premiere the BEST DAY EVER music video on Oct. 26.

Icon Animation Signs Multi-Series Deal With KITZ TV

New Spanish childrens broadcaster KITZ TV, part of Teuves bouquet of thematic channels, has snapped up more than 100 hours of programming from Icon Animations catalogue of animation to spearhead its November launch. The deal includes POSTMAN PAT (52x15 or 4x30), HILLTOP HOSPITAL (52x11) and BOOHBAH (104x20), which are represented by Icon Animation for Spain.

In addition, Icon Animation recently acquired worldwide rights to OLYMPIG (52x2) from Maga Animation, which is also part of the package of sales to KITZ TV.
