See First Look Images from ‘Blazing Saddles’-Inspired ‘Blazing Samurai’

Animated comedy based on Mel Brooks’ classic Western stars Michael Cera, Samuel L Jackson, and Ricky Gervais, with Rob Minkoff producing, and a planned 2022 release.

Aniventure and Cinesite have just dropped the first two images from their upcoming animated comedy, Blazing Samurai, inspired by the legendary Mel Brooks’ iconic 1974 satirical Western, Blazing Saddles.

Blazing Samurai follows the story of Hank, a loveable mutt with big dreams of becoming a Samurai. When he finds himself with a new job as sheriff of Kakamucho, he also finds he may have bitten off more than he can chew given the town is inhabited solely by cats. Produced by Disney’s The Lion King director, Rob Minkoff, and from the mind of comedy genius Mel Brooks, this Japanese-inspired animated comedy teaches kids and adults alike that embracing diversity is what truly makes you a hero.

The film boasts a star-studded cast including Michael Cera (as Hank), Samuel L Jackson (as Jimbo), Ricky Gervais (as Ika Chu), George Takei, Michelle Yeoh, Djimon Hounsou and Brooks himself.  The project is currently in production at Cinesite Montreal, scheduled to deliver later this year for a 2022 release.

Blazing Samurai is a freewheeling mash-up of east and west,” Minkoff said. “An action-packed comedy featuring incredible performances from our stellar cast of hilarious characters, it also delivers a great message of inclusion and acceptance. It’s sure to be a treat the whole family can enjoy.”

Mark Koetsier (The Grinch, Big Hero 6, Madagascar: Escape to Africa) directs along Minkoff (The Lion King, Mr Peabody & Sherman, Stuart Little 1&2), who is also producing with Adam Nagle (Riverdance: The Animated Adventure) and Guy Collins.
