Cartoonist Gray Morrow Passes

Illustrator and cartoonist Gray Morrow (born Dwight Graydon Morrow, 1934) passed away at his home in central Pennsylvania on Tuesday, November 6, 2001. Although he had suffered with health problems the last few years, his death was unexpected. "Gray was both a participant in and a witness to comics history," said Insight Studios Group's Mark Wheatley, who edited GRAY MORROW VISIONARY, published last summer. "He was a master illustrator who had the respect and friendship of his peers.

Just A Pilgrim To Film

Los Angeles-based film production and management company Catch 23 Entertainment has acquired the worldwide film rights to JUST A PILGRIM, the comic book created by Garth Ennis, creator of PREACHER and writer of PUNISHER. Marc Danon, Catch 23 vice president of production and acquisitions, brought JUST A PILGRIM to Catch 23. Danon, who previously handled the development of the Marvel comic book franchise at Artisan Entertainment, will oversee the project. Catch 23 will immediately begin to package and develop the property.

Mickey Gets Magical

Quiet Man completed the visual effects on a new spot for Walt Disney World via Yellow Shoes Creative Group featuring Mickey Mouse using some visual magic to create theme park adventures. As "Hat Trick" (:30), directed by Richard Sabean of Access Films opens, Mickey appears in his famous sorcerer's apprentice costume standing in front of four wooden buckets containing different colored substances.

Students Get Animated About Not Smoking

To raise young peoples awareness to the dangers of smoking, students at Antonio Arroio High School in Lisbon, Portugal participated in an animation workshop conducted by AnimAction Inc., where they produced their own media campaign warning their community about secondhand smoke. AnimActions Tobacco Use Prevention Education Program has run successfully in the greater Los Angeles area for 12 years and for the first time the program was presented to high school students in Portugal.

Infogrames Revives Atari Brand For Two New Games

Infogrames, Inc. is bringing back Atari for the holidays. Now available, MXRIDER and SPLASHDOWN for Sony PlayStation2 are the first games to launch under the new Atari banner. Infogrames recently launched both MXRIDER and SPLASHDOWN globally, releasing the games to an estimated 15,000 retail outlets in the U.S. and 23,800 outlets internationally. MXRIDER is a motocross racing game featuring authentic motorbike speed and action with over 50 licensed Motocross World Championship riders in all three motorbike classes (125cc, 250cc and 500 cc).

BAF!: Bradford Animation Festival showcases the art of animation. The National Museum of Photography, Film & Television organizes the event. The festival also features talks, seminars and the BAF! Awards. There are eight categories for the awards: professional, non-professional, commercial/promotional, digital, experimental, films for children, TV series for children and shorts under 16-minutes. This year's focus will be animation in advertising and Japanese animation.

Award-winning visual effects designer and digital artist Deak Ferrand has left post-production facility R!OT to launch the independent studio Hatch with his long-time visual effects producing partner, Cheryl Bainum. Hatch designs and produces digital visual effects for films, television, commercials and interactive projects by using the latest techniques in digital matte painting, compositing and computer graphics. The studio specializes in concept design and designing and creating 3D matte paintings.

CinéGroupe Adds Two New Shows

Canadian independent entertainment company CinéGroupe is beginning production on two new animated TV series, THE THREE PIGS and EDWARD, bringing its current production slate to nine new and five returning animated and live-action entertainment productions set for airing on U.S., Canadian and international television networks during the 2001-2002 television season.

Virus Infects Powerpuff Girls

Warner Home Video is recalling DVDs of recent Annie winner THE POWERPUFF GIRLS: MEET THE BEAT-ALLS because certain DVD-ROM programs included on the disc contain the "FunLove" computer virus. Warner Home Video stated that a computer virus was inadvertently incorporated into the DVD-ROM features during the replication process. Any computer that installs the supplemental software from the DVD-ROM special features will contract the FunLove virus, which infects PE EXE (Windows portable executables) on local and network drives.

Ubi Soft Launches Online Game Portal

Ubi Soft Entertainment's online division has launched ubi.com, a new gaming portal that allows gamers to play games and participate in online communities. ubi.com is now available in North America and France and will eventually spread to other countries. The company also has plans to extend ubi.com to console gamers later in the year. Since online communities are an important part of the gaming culture, ubi.com has licensed state-of-the-art forum technology to make it easy for players to post their comments and ideas online and hopes to give fans the ultimate community experience.

Nelvana Management Shake Up

Corus Entertainment has confirmed that Nelvana founding partner and co-CEO Patrick Loubert has left Nelvana to become an independent producer. The news comes just over a month after another co-founder, executive VP Clive Smith, left Nelvana to pursue other projects. Michael Hirsh, last of the three original founding partners, remains at the company as CEO.

DreamWorks Animator Takes Home Top Honors at InSea

The 2nd Annual India and Southeast Asian (InSea) Animation Competition concluded with the announcement of this years winners - with top honors going to DreamWorks CGI supervisor Umesh Shukla. The competition, which took place as part of the 3rd Annual Week with the Masters, honors films created by Indian and Southeast Asian filmmakers. STILL I RISE, by Umesh Shukla, is the first film to ever be awarded both the Grand Prize and 1st Prize in the Category of Best Independent Production.

InBetweening America, Candy Kugel's short film based on a Saul Steinberg New Yorker magazine cover illustration of 20 American faces was screened at the New York Film Festival on October 5 and 6, 2001. Although the film was completed and accepted into the festival before the events on September 11th, the American flag motif and the variety of American faces seemed particularly relevant in light of recent events.

RICA/Wissembourg Animated Film Festival

The RICA (Rencontres Internationales du Cinema d'Animation) is a competitive festival promoting animated film and filmmakers. For its 4th edition the festival will present 250 short and feature films. The official competition will include several feature films and about forty shorts. Five prizes will be awarded, including: the International Jury Prize, Children's Jury Prize and Best Feature Film Prize. Film formats for submissions are: 35 mm (preferably), 16 mm and BetaSP (No Digital Beta). There is no entry fee.
