BAF! 03

The UK's longest-running annual animation festival, BAF! returns for its 10th year, bigger than ever before. Now running for four days, BAF! 03 will, as usual, be crammed full of masterclasses, seminars, workshops, film screenings and special events with some of the industry's leading professionals.

BAF! 03 will open for entries on Friday 18 April. Films can be any length and from any country. There is no fee for submission.

Big Fish Screening with Tim Burton

Animadrid 2003

The 4th edition of Animadrid was organized with the purpose of fostering the film and audiovisual arts by promoting independent animation productions and providing an assembly point for artists and audiences in the international community. This year's event will pay tribute to legendary stop-motion master Ray Harryhausen. Animadrid has two competitive sections: a short films selection and the Iberoamerican Competition for television TV series pilot. In the short film category, independent films less than 60 minutes in length and created using any animation technique are eligible for entry.

Metacal Experiment

Metasin Productions is organizing the first Metacal Experiment. Artists can enter short films and videos; audio and silent films; animated and live- action pieces, all genres. The experiment will include live music, short films, standup comedy, visual art and dance. It is also looking for additional paintings, sculptures, drawings, individuals or groups wishing to perform original dance, comics, drummers/percussionists, bass players and Lighting designers. Early 1930s "Rubber Hose" Animation

As part of its "Toons Gone Wild!" series, the Two Boots Pioneer Theatre will be screening vintage "golden age" cartoons that are rarely shown anywhere. Many have not been shown on TV since the 1950s and are unlikely to be ever be available on DVD. A special ToonTalk will follow immediately after each screening. At 8:00 pm, "Early 1930s 'Rubber Hose' Animation" will screen great cartoons from that brief period when toons were really wacky and featured characters with no perceivable skeletal structure who jived to the synchronized beat. Tickets are $9.00 and $6.50 members.

The International Festival of Cinema and Technology

John Canemaker Hosts Mary Blair Lecture in NYC

Animation historian John Canemaker will appear at MoMA with a colorfully illustrated multimedia presentation: THE ART AND FLAIR OF MARY BLAIR, based on his new Disney Editions book. The Dec. 5 lecture/demo will begin at 6:30 pm and will be preceded by a book signing. Using nearly 300 illustrations, Canemaker will describe the art and life of Blair, a prolific and gifted designer/colorist who was one of the few female artists to reach the top creative rungs at the Disney studio.

Cartoombria 2003 - New Animated Images International Exhibition

Grant Munro Rediscovered

On the occasion of Grant Munro's 80th birthday and the release of a new DVD, Cut-Up, The Films of Grant Munro, The Museum of Modern Art pays tribute to this seminal but under-recognized animator. Working from within the historic Animation Unit of the National Film Board of Canada from 1945 through the early 1970s, Munro directed, produced, shot, edited and even acted in some of the most significant hand-drawn and pixilated animation ever made. A frequent collaborator with Norman McLaren, Munro brought a wicked wit and sublime grace to the art.

The Missing Screening with Ron Howard

David Ehrlich (professor of animation history at Dartmouth) presents a fascinating look at Russian animation, focusing on the work of the great Fedor Khitruk: After a 1961 visit to the Zagreb Animation Studio, whose artists were tremendously influenced for example by UPA artist John Hubley, Fedor Khitruk enthusiastically returned to Moscow to direct work whose innovative graphics completly broke with classical Soyuzmultfilm technique. He pioneered a radical departure from Russian state-sanctioned Disneyesque kitch.
