USC to Dedicate New School of Cinematic Arts Home

In honor of its 80th birthday on Sunday, USC will publicly unveil its new $175 million home on campus, the School of Cinematic Arts. George Lucas, the school's most famous film alum, donated $75 million for the new facilities through his Lucasfilm Foundation, and another $100 million for the school's endowment. He will be on hand with Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Cinematic Arts Dean Elizabeth Daley. Other donors include Warner Bros., Twentieth Century Fox and Disney.

In an interview with Roger Ebert, director Spike Lee may have let it slip that George Lucas has finally hired a director for his long-awaited war movie RED TAILS, about the Tuskegee Airman, per COMINGSOON.net.

Earlier this year, Lucas mentioned he wanted to move forward with RED TAILS. There have been rumors of directors attached to the project, including Samuel L. Jackson in his directorial debut, ever since.

Ridley To Pen Lucas' Red Tails

George Lucas has tapped John Ridley (THREE KINGS, UNDERCOVER BROTHER) to write his pet project RED TAILS, the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, reports VARIETY. The script will be based on a story by Lucas, who is funding development via Lucasfilm and exec producing. Industrial Light & Magic will handle the aerial battles.

The story chronicles the young African-American pilots who broke the color barrier to become the first black U.S. fighter pilots. The title of the project refers to the Tuskegee Airmen's planes' tails, which were painted red.

George Lucas to Provide $175 Million Gift to USC Cinema School

The University of Southern California announced that the Lucasfilm Foundation, the private charitable foundation set up by alumnus George Lucas, will provide $75 million for the construction of new educational buildings and renovations of existing structures at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. In addition, the Foundation has agreed to provide a $100 million endowment for the school.

The Force will be with the Tournament of Roses in 2007, as George Lucas is selected as the next Grand Marshal.

Tournament of Roses president Paul L. Holman was joined on stage Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2006) by Chewbacca and Wicket to announce the celebrated filmmaker as Grand Marshal, who will lead the New Year's Day celebration in Pasadena. As Grand Marshal, Lucas will ride in the 118th Rose Parade in front of a worldwide television audience, and toss the coin before the 93rd Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1, 2007.

Lucas Greenlights Indy 4

George Lucas has given the greenlight to Jeff Nathanson's recent draft for INDIANA JONES 4, reports VARIETY. Director Steven Spielberg has also given the script a thumbs up and only star Harrison Ford needs to give approval for the film to move into pre-production.

SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION director Frank Darabont had previously written a draft of the script, which passed by Spielberg and Ford, but was rejected by Lucas. Spielberg then enlisted Nathanson to pen the screenplay after having worked with the scribe on CATCH ME IF YOU CAN and THE TERMINAL.
