Catya Plate Named 2023 NYC Women’s Fund Recipient

Awarded by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and New York Foundation for the Arts, the initiative addresses underrepresentation of women in film, television, theatre, and music.

NYC Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment and New York Foundation for the Arts named Catya Plate, the 2023 NYC Women's Fund recipient for her stop-motion film Las Nogas. The Fund is an initiative that addresses the underrepresentation of women and women-identifying artists in film, television, theatre, and music.

Originally from Barcelona, Spain, and raised in Germany, Plate came to New York in 1987 through a Fulbright Scholarship for post-graduate studies at the School of Visual Arts. She has been exhibiting internationally since the mid-1980s.

In 2009, Plate launched Clothespin Freak Productions to bring her “Clothespin Freaks” characters to life through stop-motion animated shorts. The company has produced four award-winning shorts: The Reading (2010) and the eco-thrilling shorts trilogy Hanging by A Thread (2013), Meeting MacGuffin (2017), and Las Nogas (2023) – the latest will be hitting the festival circuit this year.
