The European Independent Film Festival (ECU) discovers, promotes and projects the best independent films from around the world every year at La Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris. This year's festival will take place March 13-15, 2009.

The American Cinematheque debuted its Filmmaking Seminars for Filmmakers and other artists in September 2007 with the concept of offering concrete, practical information on a variety of filmmaking, marketing, creative and business practices at a very reasonable cost to the many independent filmmakers working in the Los Angeles area.
Monstra Animated Film Festival is a meeting and convergence point of animation film and other media and arts. Not forgetting the cinematographic character of animation film works, but instead reinforcing its essence, Monstra is a space of experimentation mixing new movements, forms and artistic proposals, where animation is presented as a creative, narrative or aesthetic expression made relevant by its interception with art.

The sixth edition of Tricky Women Animation Film Festival will take place in March 5-9, 2009.
Tricky Women is dedicated exclusively to animation by women. Since 2007 it has been held annually in Vienna each March.
The festival offers an international competition of animated short films created by female artists and produced in 2007 or 2008. The deadline for applications for the preliminary selection is November 14, 2008.

The French American Cultural Society celebrates the career of critically-acclaimed animator Michel Ocelot with a free screening of his breakthrough feature film KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS at the Landmark Opera Plaza Cinema on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:40 p.m. Ocelot will host a Q&A after the film.
The Cartoon Art Museum's Annual WonderCon Weekend Party will be held on Friday, February 27, 2008, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.. Admission to this ticketed event will be on a sliding scale from $10 to $35, with guests encouraged to contribute whatever they can to support the Cartoon Art Museum. Many of the featured artists and special WonderCon guests will be in attendance, including featured guests WATCHMEN co-creator Dave Gibbons and USAGI YOJIMBO creator Stan Sakai.

Experimental animation was presented as fine art by its creators long before the art world acknowledged William Kentridge's work, the widely-accepted marker to distinguish animation a "legitimate" language in fine art. Looking beyond the constraining nomenclature of cartoon inherited from Sergei Eisenstein and forwarded by Gilles Deleuze and Rosalind Krauss, this panel visits an earlier history of art practice and critical thinking in experimental animation that was passed over by art history and then relegated to film history, where it was equally ignored.
The Omaha Film Festival is now accepting entries in the following categories: Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Short Film, Animated Short Film, OFF the EDGE Feature Film (Horror, Experimental, Dark Films longer than 25 minutes) and Nebraska Short Film.
Screenplays will be accepted in Feature Length (30-140 pages) and Short Length (Under 30 pages).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present the Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Symposium, a program spotlighting the work of the 2008 Academy Award nominees in the Makeup category, on Saturday, February 21, at 2:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
The program, moderated by Academy governor Leonard Engelman, will feature a discussion of the nominees' creative process as well as present film clips, photographs and models of their work.

This year's Academy Award nominated Production Designers and Set Decorators will participate in a panel to discuss their nominated films and what it took to design them on February 21 at 2:30 p.m., the eve of the Academy Awards show, at the Egyptian Theatre (6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood). The Art Directors Guild and the Set Decorators Society of America, in association with the American Cinematheque, are presenting this panel, which will be preceded by excerpts of each nominated film.
