Jules Engel Centennial Celebration

Some of today's most inventive practitioners in the art of animation come together to honor the far-reaching legacy of Jules Engel (1909–2003) -- animation pioneer, fine artist, and one of the most beloved educators in CalArts history.

The Jules Engel Centennial Celebration begins with a roundtable discussion entitled "The Influence of Jules Engel on Contemporary Animation."

The distinguished panelists are all former students of Engel at CalArts:

Nippon Connection Film Festival 2009

Japanese cinema returns to Frankfurt this spring. From April 15-19, Nippon Connection will feature fascinating and creative Japanese films for the ninth time. Quay Brothers at the Coolidge Corner Theatre

The independent Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts has chosen animation luminaries the Quay Brothers as the recipients of the 2009 Coolidge Award. The prestigious award is given annually to a film artist or artists whose work advances the spirit of original and challenging cinema. Previous honorees are film producer Jeremny Thomas in 2008, film editor Thelma Schoonmaker in 2007, actress Meryl Street in 2006, Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro in 2005 and Chinese director Zhang Yimou in 2004.

Animate the World Festival 2009

On Saturday, March 28, 2009 the Freer Gallery hosts the seventh annual "National Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon" in cooperation with the Japan Information and Culture Center and Otakorp Inc. The 33rd Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) will be held March 19-29, 2009 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The festival features two family film programs as well as several shorts programs that feature animation. Last year, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences designated the CIFF as one of its qualifiers to the Academy Awards.

Animated short films to screen include TINY NATION from ILL Clan Animation Studios, CLOSED (Germany), MY HAPPY END (Germany), THE NEEDFUL HEAD (U.S.), POUND (U.S.), SLEEPING BETTY (Canada), ZOOLOGIC (U.S.) and ARTS DESIRE (U.S.).
