The NAB Show is the world's largest professional digital media industry convention. Some of today's most inventive practitioners in the art of animation come together to honor the far-reaching legacy of Jules Engel (1909–2003) -- animation pioneer, fine artist, and one of the most beloved educators in CalArts history.
The Jules Engel Centennial Celebration begins with a roundtable discussion entitled "The Influence of Jules Engel on Contemporary Animation."

Japanese cinema returns to Frankfurt this spring. From April 15-19, Nippon Connection will feature fascinating and creative Japanese films for the ninth time. With over 150 short and feature films, ranging from experimental and animation films to blockbuster movies and documentaries, the festival includes many German and European premieres. Approximately 20 directors will present their films in person.
The independent Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts has chosen animation luminaries the Quay Brothers as the recipients of the 2009 Coolidge Award. The prestigious award is given annually to a film artist or artists whose work advances the spirit of original and challenging cinema. Previous honorees are film producer Jeremny Thomas in 2008, film editor Thelma Schoonmaker in 2007, actress Meryl Street in 2006, Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro in 2005 and Chinese director Zhang Yimou in 2004.
Be recognized as a top animator. As part of their renowned Animate the World Festival, the Barbican is launching an Animator of the Year competition this year to recognize undiscovered talent in the U.K.

The South Beach International Animation Festival is seeking submissions for this annual event. From April 2-5, 2009 the festival will screen world and U.S. animated films including student and professional works of all varieties. Categories include advertising, new media, "Toons After Dark" and "Boomers" for animators over 50 and doing animation for the first time.
The 13th edition of Cartoons on the Bay, the International Television and Multimedia Animation Festival promoted by Rai and organized by RaiTrade in cooperation with RaiFiction and with the contribution of the Sistema Turistico Locale Terre di Portofino (Local Tourist System - Lands of Portofino), will be held from April 2-5 in the Tigullio Gulf of Italy for the first time.

On Saturday, March 28, 2009 the Freer Gallery hosts the seventh annual "National Cherry Blossom Anime Marathon" in cooperation with the Japan Information and Culture Center and Otakorp Inc. The day-long event, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Meyer Auditorium, features a costume show, exhibition and dancers courtesy of the DC Anime Club.
Special guest Frederik Schodt, author of the book MANGA! MANGA! THE WORLD OF JAPANESE COMICS, will also be in attendance.

Cortoons International Short Animated Film Festival is opening registrations for its sixth edition, that will be held March 25-29, 2009 at the Palladium Theatre in Rome, Italy.

The Game Developers Conference (GDC), returns in 2009 to the Moscone Center in San Francisco with world-class programming for the art, science and business of developing digital entertainment.
On Monday, March 23, comics writer and critic Danny Fingeroth will give an illustrated presentation about the life, work, and influence of writer and artist Will Eisner.
Taking a tour through Eisner's life-in effect, a journey through comics history-the presentation will serve as an introduction to those who'd like to know more about how the graphic novel phenomenon (which has spawned hit comics-based movies like THE DARK KNIGHT and WATCHMEN), and will offer new insights for those who may already know the work of Eisner and his creative descendants.
Animabasauri5-Animabasque, Basauri-Bizkaia International Animated Film Festival's fifth edition will be held from March 20-27 in Basauri (Bizkaia). Numerous international feature and short films will take part in competitive and non-competitive sections and besides, a lot of activities will be organized such us animation workshops for adults and children, screenings for schools and other several events.
The 33rd Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) will be held March 19-29, 2009 in Cleveland, Ohio.
The festival features two family film programs as well as several shorts programs that feature animation. Last year, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences designated the CIFF as one of its qualifiers to the Academy Awards.

The Tokyo International Anime Fair 2009 (TAF2009) will be held Wednesday, March 18 to Saturday, March 21 at the Tokyo Big Sight in Japan.
The eighth anniversary of this event is one of the world's largest anime exhibitions. Featuring extensive programs, TAF has been drawing international attention as the leading anime festival.

The Producers Guild of America New Media Council East presents a comprehensive session on the latest examples of animation in non-fiction filmmaking -- "What's Up, Documentary?" -- Wednesday evening, March 18, from 7-9 p.m., at the New School's Eugene Lang Auditorium, 55 West 13th Street, 2nd Floor. Aubagne International Film Festival supports the young cinematographic creation and musical creation related to picture. The festival has a feature and shorts competition. For features, the event screens first and second films of any genre that feature original music.
