Legendary Animation Educator Moritz Passes Away

AWN is saddened to report that legendary animation educator and historian Bill Moritz passed away on March 12, 2004 after suffering a long illness.

Dr. William Moritz is a world-renowned expert on animation, experimental film and visual music, and has authored more than 100 articles, chapters and program notes. His forthcoming book OPTICAL POETRY is the culmination of his 34 years of research and work with the Fischinger Archive. OPTICAL POETRY reveals fully his passion for the Fischinger legacy, and fully details his decades of archival work on the films.

Cartoon Duo Make Animated Passion Parody for SNL

That animated duo who brought to cartoon life "The Ambiguously Gay Duo for SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE are at it again after a four-year break. J. J. Sedelmaier Productions has just wrapped production of a SATURDAY TV FUNHOUSE cartoon with Robert Smigel for SNL. The piece is a parody of Mel Gibson's THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, tentatively scheduled to run on tomorrow's broadcast, March 13, 2004, about midway through the show that runs from 11:30 pm to 12:30 am on NBC.

Electronic Arts Just Made with Godfather Game

At the Bear Stearns entertainment and media conference in Palm Beach, Florida, Electronic Arts announced it was creating a videogame based on the classic tale, THE GODFATHER, reported VARIETY. The company said the titled would most likely be their first M (mature)-rated game. EA has not released whether the game film be directly based on Francis Ford Coppola's film trilogy or Mario Puzo's original novels.

Nickelodeon's series CHALKZONE will be getting a little more adult influence when independent animation maverick Bill Plympton makes a guest artist appearance on the show. The special episode first aired in February and will now be rebroadcast on March 13, 2004 on CBS at 10:30 am.

French Finding Nemo Suit Thrown Out of Court

A Parisian judge, on March 12, 2004, threw out a claim made by French children's author Franck Le Calvez that would stop the sale of FINDING NEMO merchandise in France, reported the DOW JONES BUSINESS JOURNAL. Le Calvez claims that NEMO is a copyright infringement of his 2002 book PIERROT LE POISSON CLOWN, which features a lead clown fish character who looks strikingly like Nemo.

New Batman to Be Interactively Linked to Toys

For the first time, kids (and bigger kids) can truly join in the action of the next BATMAN animated series. Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) announced it has partnered with Mattel Inc. and VEIL Interactive Technologies to link action figure and vehicles with interactive television. The technology will be exclusive to WBCP and Mattel for 2004. VEIL (Video Encoded Invisible Light) technology transmits encoded digital data -- in the form of graphics, storyline components, gadgets and other features -- directly from show, which is captured by Mattel's new line of Batwave children's toys.

Naughty Toons Slapped with $500,000 Fines?

Broadcasters may have to rethink how adult their adult animation gets now that the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed legislation increasing the maximum fine for radio and TV indecency from $11,000 to $500,000, reports the ASSOCIATED PRESS.

The vote was 391-22. A U.S. Senate bill is under discussion. The bill raises the maximum fine for a broadcast license-holder from $27,500 to $500,000 and the fine for a performer from $11,000 to $500,000.
