Cartoon Tributes

The Catalonian city of Girona is hosting the second annual Cartoon Tributes, the European Association of Animation Film's recognition of companies' contribution to the development of the European animation industry. Created in 2006, the Cartoon Tributes has three categories: Broadcaster of the Year, Investor/Distributor of the Year and Producer of the Year. The winners are voted on by the more than 750 participants in the 18th Cartoon Forum, which will be celebrated this year Sept. 19-22 in Girona.

The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF 07) is the premiere animation festival in North America. Independent, commercial, and student animators working in a variety of media submit their work, under eight umbrella categories; including independent short films, feature films, new media, music videos, commercials, TV shows, student films, films for children and the TELETOON Canadian Student Animation Scholarship.

Cartoon Forum 2007

Every year more than 250 potential investors -- all interested in animation -- attend the Cartoon Forum. This includes more than 100 broadcasters and 150 investors/video editors who have the advantage of getting a sneak preview of the latest animation projects for the television from 31 different European countries.

More than 300 projects (for a total budget of more than 1 billion EUR) presented at the Cartoon Forum have secured their financing and are now in production or being broadcasted worldwide.

Pulitzer Prize-Winner The Road Winding to a Theater Near You

2929 Prods. are preparing a screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel THE ROAD, according to the trades. Marc Butan, Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban are exec producing the film, which Dimension Films is in talks to distribute in North America.

The story follows a father and his son as the wander a post-apocalyptic America, looking for other human beings. Viggo Mortensen is rumored to be the top choice for the lead.

Garner Connects with Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Jennifer Garner is in talks to join Matthew McConaughey in New Line's supernatural romantic comedy GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Mark Waters (MEAN GIRLS) is directing. Jonathan Shestack and Brad Epstein are the producers.

Upon attending his younger brother's wedding, a bachelor (McConaughey) is haunted by the ghosts of old girlfriends who try to lead him toward his true love (Garner).

Cale Boyter and Sam Brown are shepherding for New Line.

Monsters vs. Aliens to Invade Earlier

MONSTERS VS. ALIENS, DreamWorks Animation's first-ever film produced in stereoscopic 3-D technology, has been pushed up to a March 27, 2009 release. The Paramount Pictures release had been previously slated for May 15 and now avoids splitting the market with James Cameron's 3-D/CG fantasy, AVATAR, which opens May 22. However, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, the next 3D-animated feature from Sony Pictures Animation, is currently scheduled for March 27 as well.

Buster Announces Latest Bravo, FX Spots

Buster, a conceptual design studio helmed by Executive Creative Director Jonas Morganstein has announced its latest projects. The company has produced a new main title and graphics package for Bravo's new series starring Tim Gunn titled TIM GUNN'S GUIDE TO STYLE. Buster has also completed new work for FX.

For TIM GUNN'S GUIDE TO STULE, the Buster-produced title combines live footage of Tim Gunn and co-host Veronica Webb, as well as dynamic motion graphics that reflect his classic pinstripe style.

Marc Davis Celebration To Showcase Canadian Women in Animation

Some of the most talented women in animation will take the stage for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 11th Marc Davis Celebration of Animation. "Canadian Women in Animation," presented in cooperation with the National Film Board of Canada, will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Oscar nominees Janet Perlman, Caroline Leaf, Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis and Academy Award winner Torill Kove will introduce their short films, then participate in a group panel discussion moderated by animation critic Charles Solomon.

Significant Interest for TV-Loonland Stake in Metrodome

TV-Loonland AG announced that it has received significant interest in its stake in home entertainment firm, Metrodome. Earlier in the year, TV-Loonland AG announced its plans to sell its majority shareholding in Metrodome. Interest in buying the stake were received from North America, Europe and the U.K., both from strategic investors, the film industry and venture capital funds.

TV-Loonland To Distribute Nippon's Penelope

TV-Loonland announced its appointment by Japanese production company Nippon Animation to handle multi-territory distribution for its pre-school property PENELOPE (26x5).

Under the deal, TV-Loonland will handle rights for TV, home video, VOD, broadband, IPTV and mobile sales to Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Baltic States, Scandinavia, Israel, the Middle East as well as Africa, including South Africa.

Classic Media Appoints Dalch As Brand Director

Classic Media announced that it has appointed Lara Dalch, formerly Director of Promotions Marketing for Cartoon Network & Adult Swim, to the position of Senior Director, Brand Development & Promotions for its operations in North America, effective immediately. Based at the company's North American headquarters in New York, the position reports to Nicole Blake, SVP, Marketing.

Dalch will represent Classic Media at the L.A. Office Roadshow, Sept. 18-20, 2007.

Animation Writer Re-Elected WGAW President

TV animation writer Patric Verrone has won re-election as the WGA West President, reports VARIETY. Verrone received 90% of the votes cast, beating radio newswriter Kathy Kiernan. His re-election comes right as the guild is about to enter new contract negotiations for movie and primetime TV writers. The current contract expires Oct. 31. The biggest sticking point in talks is over WGA's demand for more Internet residuals while the producers want to rework the residual structure completely.

CatDog Creator Sells Wally Chapter Book to Cartoon Network

Peter Hannan, creator of Nickelodeon's CATDOG, has inked a development deal with Cartoon Network to turn his chapter book series -- WALLY, KING OF FLURB -- into an animated TV show. Hannan is in the process of writing and illustrating the series for HarperCollins. Hannan's other HarperCollins series of chapter books, SUPER GOOFBALLS, continues with an all-new issue on Oct. 2, 2007.
