Anima Mundi 2002 Award Winners

Anima Mundi has announced the winners for its 2002 festival, which took place from July 12 - 21, 2002 in Rio de Janeiro then moved to São Paulo, Brazil from July 24 - July 28, 2002. The festival is the major animation festival in South America and includes a wide range of open activities, including workshops, lectures and exhibitions. A full list of winners is below.

Primetime Emmy Nominations!

Nominations for the 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on July 18, 2002 and the Fox network ruled the Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming Less Than One Hour) category with all three of its popular prime-time sitcoms FUTURAMA, THE SIMPSONS and KING OF THE HILL nabbing noms. They were joined by Comedy Central's SOUTH PARK and Nickelodeon's AS TOLD BY GINGER.

Michael Dudok De Wit Receives Honorary Degree From Alma Mater

The Surrey Institute of Art & Design University College will award an honorary degree to Michael Dudok de Wit during the Institute's convocation ceremony at Guildford Cathedral on July 19, 2002. De Wit, an Oscar-winning animator and graduate of the Institute, will be presented the degree in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the animation industry. Michael Dudok de Wit studied animation at the West Surrey College of Art and Design (now The Surrey Institute), where he made his first film, THE INTERVIEW.

Cartoon d’Or 2002 Nominees

Five European short films, selected from a list of awarded films screened at leading European animation festivals, will be competing for the 2002 Cartoon d'Or. The Cartoon d'Or will be given during Cartoon Forum's closing evening, Saturday, September 21, 2002. The nominees are:

Michael Dudok de Wit's Father and Daughter Takes Zagreb Grand Prize

Michael Dudok de Wit's multiple award-winning short FATHER AND DAUGHTER has claimed yet another honor, winning the Grand Prize at Zagreb 2002, the 15th World Festival of Animated Films. The official competition jury, Oksana Cherkasova (Russia), Joanna Quinn (Great Britain), Linda Simensky (USA), Georges Lacroix (France) and Edo Lukman (Croatia), singled out FATHER AND DAUGHTER from the 85 films in competition.

Jury Scans Barcode For Grand Prize At Annecy

The coveted short film grand prize at the 26th International Festival of Animated Film at Annecy went to Adriaan Lokman's CG short BARCODE, while Barry Purves' animated comedy drama HAMILTON MATTRESS was honored with the grand prize for Best TV Animation Program. 245 films were screened in the "Annecy 2002" official selection, coming from 33 countries, with more than 200 films premiering at the festival. The awards were presented at the closing ceremony held on Saturday, June 8, 2002. Congratulations to all the winners!

National Cartoonists Society Honors Jerry Scott

Jerry Scott, co-creator of the ZITS and BABY BLUES comic strips, has won the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) 2001 Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year. The "Oscar of cartooning" was presented at a black tie gala during the 56th Annual Reuben Awards Weekend, held this year in Cancun, Mexico. The Reuben Award, given by the NCS each year for exemplary cartoon work created in the previous year, was designed by and named after the NCS' first president, Rube Goldberg. In addition, cartoonists in various professional divisions were also honored with special plaques for excellence.

2002 Dusty Film Festival Winners

Beginning May 13, 2002 the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City hosted its 13th Annual Dusty Film Festival and Awards, a three-day event featuring short films, videos and animation where graduating students from SVA were recognized for their outstanding achievements. The festival ended on May 16th with an evening awards ceremony and gala reception at New York's Beekman Theater. Jae Young Lee won Outstanding Achievement in Stop-Motion Animation for THE LETTER FROM HEAVEN while Outstanding Achievement in Traditional Animation went to Ryan Smith for STITCH.

Siggraph 2002 Presents The Computer Animation Festival Awards

ACM SIGGRAPH has announced the SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival's Best Animated Short and Jury Award winners for SIGGRAPH 2002. The SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival showcases films documenting significant advances in technology, interactive techniques and the creative potential of computer graphics. The two award winners were selected from 640 entries. Poland's Tomek Baginski won the Best Animated Short award for THE CATHEDRAL, based on Jacek Dukaj's novel of the same name.

Winners Announced For Student Academy Awards

The winners of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 29th Annual Student Academy Awards competition have been announced. The nominated films were voted upon by Academy members and the winning students will be flown to Los Angeles to participate in a week of industry-related activities and social events that will culminate June 9, 2002 with the awards presentation ceremony at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

KAFI Winners Announced

May 17-19, 2002, Kalamazoo, Michigan hosted the first Kalamazoo Animation Festival International (KAFI). $15,000 in cash prizes was handed out to winners in 24 competition levels. Honorees included a Gold for Zach Schlappi's PASTA FOR WAR in the Student Graduate Films category, and TONGUES AND TAXIS by Michael Overbeck won the Independent Short Film Gold Award, and tied with ROCKIN' & ROLLIN' for Best In Show. Yvon Of The Yukon Conquers The Leo Awards

The Leo Awards 2002 ceremony took place at the Westin Bayshore Resort & Marina in Vancouver, BC on May 11, 2002. Honoring the best in British Columbia's film and television industry, the big winner in the animation and children's category was Studio B's YVON OF THE YUKON (Producer: Kathy Antonson Rocchio, Executive Producers: Blair Peters and Chris Bartleman), which took home Leo's for Best Youth or Children's Program or Series, Best Animation Program or Series and Best Director, Youth or Children's Program or Series (Greg Sullivan for the episode "Chariots of Fire").

Kevin Smith Hosts The Official Star Wars Fan Film Awards

Thanks to the Star Wars Fan Film Awards, being an obsessed and rabid fan may get you on TV one day, and not just on the evening news! On May 12, 2002, the SCI FI Channel will present the first-ever Official Star Wars Fan Film Awards, in recognition of the best short films made by STAR WARS enthusiasts. The Leo Awards Nominees Announced

The regional awards for excellence in film and television in British Columbia, Canada, The Leo Awards, announced their nominees on April 11, 2002. Winners in 74 categories will be announced at two separate ceremonies on May 10 and May 11, 2002. Vancouver-based studios Mainframe and Studio B dominated the animation noms, with Mainframe picking up nominations for series' ACTION MAN and REBOOT as well as four nominations for the direct-to-video BARBIE IN THE NUTCRACKER including Best Animation Program and Best Children or Youth Series.

Cartoons On The Bay Announces Pulcinella Winners

The 6th Pulcinella Awards were presented in Positano, Italy, April 22, 2002 at Cartoons on the Bay, the international festival and conference on television animation. 38 programs were in competition for this year's awards. The international jury was made up of Bob Balser (president of Cartoon, Belgium), Eve Baron (head of the childrens department, France 3, France), Bill Kroyer (senior animation director at Rhythm & Hues, USA), Phillippe Jacot (director of children's programming UBE, Switzerland) and Gianfranco Noferi (director of RAI, Italy).

Stuttgart Animated Film Festival Awards

The 11th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film was celebrated March 22-27, 2002. The biannual festival presented a wide-ranging program. 425 films were shown over six days and in four competitions. Prizes amounting to 54,500 Euro were handed out. In the International Competition, the Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg (7,500 Euro) went to STROJENIE INSTRUMENTÓW (TUNING INSTRUMENTS) by Jerzy Kucia, while the Prize of the City of Stuttgart, also 7,500 Euro, went to Phil Mulloy's THE INVASION.

MPSE Golden Reels Awarded For Sound Editing

The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) organization held their 49th MPSE Golden Reel Awards banquet on Saturday, March 23, 2002 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City, California. The Golden Reel Awards acknowledge the year's best work in the various areas of sound editing. Animaction Awards Teen-Produced PSAs

AnimAction, Inc. will be presenting their 12th Annual TEAM (Tobacco Education Awareness Message) Awards on April 10, 2002, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. at the Wadsworth Theatre located in Brentwood, California. AnimAction is a production company dedicated to utilizing the art of animation as a way to educate children about issues of global concern. The 29th Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominees were announced on March 13, 2002 and Scholastic Productions CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG walked away with five nominations, topping all other animated shows. Close behind was another PBS series, ARTHUR, which tied with The WBs JACKIE CHAN ADVENTURES at three nominations each.
