STRATA GANZA Strata Cut Stop-Motion Event Coming to NYC

Eight innovative artists will share how they make, show, cut and animate clay with daily sessions running October 3-6 at the Pratt Institute, Department of Digital Arts in Brooklyn – tickets are now on sale.

The first ever STRATA GANZA comes to NYC for one week - October 3-6th at the Pratt Institute, Department of Digital Arts in Brooklyn, featuring eight of the top Strata Cut innovators who join forces for a chance to “Think Strata.” This group will describe, share, make, show, and cut in eight different and distinct ways during this “shape over time teach-in spectacular.”

Strata cut (or stratacut or strata-cut) is an animation technique combining stop-motion with slicing clay (plasticine) blocks. It defines the language of shapes moving through space and time. Every block of clay contains potential animation that varies by its build.

The event will take place each day on the 4th floor of the DDA at Myrtle Hall. Sessions will be in the Gallery, Hall, and Stop-Motion Studio rooms. Students and the ticketed public will participate and see how shape-programmed clay works before making their own first ‘Time Sculptures.’

This in-person event takes place October 3-6, 2023, running from 9:30 am – 7:00 pm daily.

Each day includes four sessions and is open to the public – tickets are available as All-Day passes or for specific sessions. Much clay is provided – but bring some of your own, just in case - so others can have some.

Tuesday is the intro and basic textures - fundamentals, and basic cutting.

Wednesday is rotation and more complex tutorials including Guillotine Slicing.

Thursday is advanced complex work and deep dive strata.

Friday is the static art and the future of strata cut in CG / AI / and multi-camera capture to create virtual versions of your complete sculptures - and the ability to re-cut them at any angle.

The ‘Ganza’ includes the onsite teaching of:

  • Ellard DeVane - The power of vivid electric textures.
  • Mason Lindroth - Strata Cut latte and video game sprites/gifs.
  • Taylor J Wells – The strata guillotine, smooth-cutting graphic design.
  • Terrance White - The sculptural stopmo variation of angle cut-ups.
  • David Daniels - The OG of shape over-time engineering

And video Link Participants

  • Toni Alarco - The stop-mo/strata and shape-over-time
  • Luca Tarantini – A look at synthetic time sculpting with CG Strata and Strata AI - the dawn of hallucination engines for generative psycho-morphia.
  • Jordan Tager - Indie music video hypnosis and sonic-driven textures and designs.
  • Steffie Yee - Strata Cut for dream stories and sound-driven imagery.

Each artist brings a unique clay slice story - different insights into seeing world lines and motion flow outcomes - different program approaches for clay layers, twists, dynamic angles, and geometry distortions.
