Not to Scale Creates Stop-Motion Spots for SAGA

Not to Scale’s directors Ubik have created three charming 30” stop motion commercials for the new SAGA campaign.

Press Release from Not to Scale

Not to Scale’s directors Ubik have created three charming 30” stop motion commercials for the new SAGA campaign.

The three commercials promote SAGA cruises, holidays and car Insurance.

Each spot features a couple’s hands placing photographs and items onto a table as they tell us about their amazing experience with SAGA.

All three commercials were shot and directed by Ubik in two weeks at Clapham Road Studios.

The directors created all the photographs. Actors, sets and 3D items were shot by Ollie Downie, using a Canon 5D. A production line was then set up to composite the elements using photoshop and after effects, and the image sequences were printed as photographs, ready to be shot on the tabletops.

Ubik precisely planned the layouts and timings for each spot. The three wooden surfaces were beautifully lit by DOP Simon Paul, and the camera was positioned at a carefully measured height and angle to ensure all items were clearly visible. Ubik then worked with their experienced team of stop motion animators to painstakingly shoot every photograph and object frame by frame. Throughout all 3 commercials a selection of 2D elements transform into animated 3D objects: props and bespoke models. Clever transitions were created to get from one scene to the next so that all 3 commercials could be created in one shot.

The final post: cleaning up shots, rig removal and colour correction, were carried out in after effects at Not To Scale’s studio. Tim Waller at Molinare then graded the commercials.
