Animated ‘Lord of The Rings: The War of The Rohirrim’ Release Delayed

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation’s original anime feature The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim has been delayed from its April 12, 2024 release to December 13, 2024, according to Deadline.

The move was part a greater restructuring of Warner Bros.’s release slate, after Dune: Part Two was pushed to March 15, 2024 due to the ongoing strikes, which subsequently pushed Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire to April 12, 2024.

The War of the Rohirrim is a standalone project set nearly two centuries prior to the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The feature serves as a companion piece to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The film centers around the King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand, and will explore how Helm’s Deep - the fortified gorge named after Hammerhand that appeared in Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - was first created.

Succession actor Brian Cox will provide the voice of Helm Hammerhand, and is joined by Gaia Wise; Miranda Otto; Lorraine Ashbourne (Bridgerton); Yazdan Qafouri (I Came By); Benjamin Wainwright (BBC One’s World on Fire); Laurence Ubong Williams (Gateway); Shaun Dooley (The Witcher); Michael Wildman (Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw); Jude Akuwudike (Beasts of No Nation); Bilal Hasna (BBC’s Sparks); and Janine Duvitski (ITV’s Benidorm).

Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus) directs from a script by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, based on another treatment by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Philippa Boyens, a series vet who was a member of the Oscar-winning screenwriting team for both the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies, serves as executive producer. Joseph Chou produces under his Sola Entertainment banner.
