Manchester Animation Festival Announces 2018 Winners

The Manchester Animation Festival, the U.K.’s largest animation, has wrapped its fourth edition, handing out awards at a ceremony held on November 15 hosted by animation legend Barry Purves.

This year’s MAF Film Awards celebrated some of the best animated short films from around the world, with 69 films screening in competition from 19 different countries. Categories included Short Films, Commissioned Films, Immersive Films, and Student Films. The event also included the Industry Excellence Awards celebrating individuals in the industry who excel in Character Design, Scriptwriting, Storyboarding and Character Animation.

Bloeistraat 11 by Nienke Deutz won the award for Best Short Film, with a special mention for Egg by Martina Scarpelli. Travelogue Tel Aviv By Samuel Patthey received the MAF2018 Award for Best Student Film, and Somewhere Soft by Satoe Yoshinari received a Special Mention for Best Student Film.

Back to the Moon by FX Goby & Helene LeRoux from Google Spotlight Stories was given the award for Best Immersive Film, with the jury noting, “Perfectly uses the technology of VR to transport you into the magical world of Méliès.”
