Jack Black Boards ‘Minecraft’ Live-Action Feature

The famed actor, comedian, and musician boards the upcoming adaptation of Mojang’s best-selling video game, which has yet to secure a title, but is set to hit theaters April 4, 2025; production began in New Zealand late last year.

Jack Black has joined the cast of the upcoming live-action Minecraft feature adaptation, reports Variety. The famed actor, comedian, and musician joins Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Mozart in the Jungle), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), and Emma Myers (Wednesday), who also star. Production began in New Zealand late last year.

Minecraft is currently in development with Warner Bros. in partnership with Legendary Pictures. Jared Hess directs, although a writer has yet to be announced.

The game of Minecraft, first released by Sweden’s Mojang Studios in 2011 and purchased by Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014, immerses players in a low-res, pixelated “sandbox” simulation, where they can use blocks to build entire worlds. The thematic adaptation follows a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers who set out to save the Overworld after a malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction.

Mary Parent (Dune) and Roy Lee produce. Jill Messick, adds THR, will “receiv[e] a posthumous producing credit for developing the film before her death in 2018.” Lydia Winters and Vu Bui of Mojang will also produce alongside Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts, who serve as executive producers.

While it's super early in production, we know Dan Lemmon and Fiona Crawford are listed as VFX supervisors, and Halon Entertainment is working on previs.

Minecraft is expected to premiere April 4, 2025.
