Warner Bros. Announces Jason Momoa-Led ‘Minecraft’ Feature Release Date

The upcoming adaptation of Mojang’s best-selling video game of all time has yet to secure a title but will hit theaters in 2025; Momoa’s new ‘Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom’ now hits theaters December 20, 2023.

This is not a drill! The upcoming Minecraft film led by Jason Momoa finally has an official release date, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The live-action adaptation based on Mojang’s best-selling video game (of all time) will hit theaters April 4, 2025, a date Warner Bros. already reserved for the as-of-now untitled film.

The game of Minecraft, first released by Sweden’s Mojang Studios in 2011 and purchased by Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014, immerses players in a low-res, pixelated “sandbox” simulation, where they can use blocks to build entire worlds. The thematic adaptation follows a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers who set out to save the Overworld after a malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction. No word yet on who Momoa will portray, but Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) will helm the project.

In addition to the official release date, Warner Bros. has also announced that James Wan’s Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom, also led by the beautifully maned Momoa, will debut December 20, five days earlier than originally scheduled.

The Minecraft film is currently in development with Warner Bros. in partnership with Legendary Pictures, and is produced by Mary Parent (Dune) and Roy Lee. Jill Messick, adds THR, will “receiv[e] a posthumous producing credit for developing the film before her death in 2018.” Lydia Winters and Vu Bui of Mojang will also produce alongside Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts, who serve as executive producers.
