Paul Blart Saves Mall, Wins Weekend Box Office

Kevin James comedy PAUL BLART: MALL COP won the box office with $39.2M for Sony in its opening holiday weekend. The box office as a whole was up 31 percent over last year's Martin Luther King, Jr. four-day weekend (per VARIETY).

GRAN TORINO (Warner Bros.) moved down one spot to second with $25.6M and in six weeks has a cume of $76.6M. Third went to opener MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D, the widest 3-D opening yet in 2,534 screens, making $24.1M for Lionsgate.

LipSync Post Creates Magical VFX for The Secret of Moonacre

LipSync Post has completed the DI and 70 VFX shots for the forthcoming feature film THE SECRET OF MOONACRE. Directed by Gabor Csupo (BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA), the film tells the story of a 13-year-old's adventure into a magical world from which she must banish an ancient curse. The majority of LipSync's work focused on a mystical string of "moon pearls" that are key to the film's plot.

Calon Teams With Osmonds for Animated Film

Independent animation company Calon TV has teamed up with Merrill Osmond, lead singer of the 1970s family music group The Osmonds, to develop an animated movie for TV.

The Welsh independent TV production company, known for the BAFTA-winning preschool animated series HANA'S Helpline, is working to turn Osmond's idea of a mythical horse called SHILOH into a feature-length film. Osmond will perform the film's soundtrack.

SpongeBob Documentary Gets I.O.U.S.A., Worldplay Team

Nickelodeon has inked a deal with production company O'Malley Creadon to produce the first-ever SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS documentary in celebration of the series' 10th anniversary. Acclaimed filmmaker Patrick Creadon (WORDPLAY and I.O.U.S.A) will co-produce, direct and write the documentary, along with co-producer Christine O'Malley. The one-hour original television documentary (title TBA) will chronicle the ascent of the absorbing character's journey to pop culture stardom.

Columbia Wins Asimov's Foundation

In an auction that concluded late Thursday, Columbia won the screen rights to FOUNDATION, the sci-fi trilogy by Isaac Asimov, per VARIETY. Roland Emmerich will direct the film.

Emmerich and Centropolis partner Michael Wimer are producing. FOUNDATION was originally published as a series of eight short stories in ASTOUNDING magazine in 1942 and is about humans scattered on planets throughout the galaxy living under the rule of the Galactic Empire.

Pixel Magic completed 150 visual effects shots in the film MARLEY & ME. 20th Century Fox released this big screen adaptation of THE NEW YORK TIMES bestseller by columnist John Grogan on Christmas Day, 2008. The film quickly reached the top of the box office charts, grossing more than $120 million by its third week of release.

The autobiographical story recounts the Grogan family's life with Marley, a large, unruly Labrador retriever. Through their experiences with Marley, the Grogans learned many key lessons on family life and happiness.

Bebop Anime Film Adaptation Gets Keanu

Keanu Reeves is attached to star in a live-action adaptation of Japanese anime TV series COWBOY BEBOP for Twentieth Century Fox, according to VARIETY.

Reeves would reunite with THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL producer Erwin Stoff (through his 3 Arts banner) and would play the role of Spike Spiegel, an adventurous bounty hunter traveling through space circa 2071. Spiegel and his fellow bounty hunters travel via spaceship, the Bebop.

Screenplay is being penned by Peter Craig and Joshua Long is exec producing.

Tuesday Watchmen Hearing Canceled

A court conference that was scheduled for today between Fox and Warner Bros. has been canceled, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, with rumors circulating that the long-gestating WATCHMEN case is finally settled or nearing settlement.

U.S. District Judge Gary A. Feess ruled in December that Fox has distribution rights to the film WB made and is planning on a March 6 release, and the two studios have been meeting since Friday to settle.

Emily Blunt Rumored For Black Widow in Iron Man 2

Emily Blunt, who will be seen next in Universal's THE WOLF MAN, has emerged as a frontrunner to play the role of Natasha Romanoff in IRON MAN 2, per VARIETY.

The character is a Soviet spy who doubles as Black Widow, who wears a skintight black costume enhanced by high-tech weapons. Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell are negotiating to play the two key villains in the Marvel Ent. production set for a summer 2010 release from Paramount.

Marvel did not comment on casting for Black Widow. Justin Theroux is writing the script that Jon Favreau will direct.

Artist Joann Sfar To Direct Rabbi's Cat

Comicbook artist Joann Sfar will direct the upcoming 2D animated feature THE RABBI'S CAT, based on his most popular novel, per VARIETY.

Sfar was also recently hired to direct GAINSBOURG, VIE HEROIQUE. He will co-direct RABBI'S CAR with Antoine Delesvaux, who is also producing under Autochenille Production based in Paris, a shingle he founded with Sfar and comics artist Clement Oubrerie in 2007.

Stanton Confirms John Carter to be Live Action

Andrew Stanton told SCI FI WIRE that his next project (under Disney, not Pixar) JOHN CARTER OF MARS, will be his first live-action film.

"[I'm] deep into it," Stanton said in an exclusive interview at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association award ceremony in Century City, Calif., on Monday, where he accepted the award for best picture of 2008 for WALL-E. "I'm on my next draft of it. We're in preproduction art-wise, and we're starting to talk to actors. So it's full bore."

Oscar Shorts Screen Nationwide on Feb. 6

Shorts International will bring the Oscar-nominated short films in the live-action and animated categories to U.S. theatres on February 6 2009, giving audiences around the country an opportunity to see the nominated films prior to the 81st Academy Awards ceremony on February 22.

The Oscar Shorts program will open in theaters starting February 6, expanding to 60 cities throughout the country in the following weeks. This year's release will also in part be supported by Magnolia Pictures.

Clint Eastwood's GRAN TORINO (Warner Bros.) won the weekend box office in its fifth week out, earning $29.5M with its expansion to 2,808 theaters. In total, the film's gross is $40.5M.

Romantic comedy BRIDE WARS from 20th Century Fox (vfx from Custom Film Effects) came in second in its opening weekend with $21.06M.

Horror opener THE UNBORN came in third with $19.8M for Universal. VFX were by Asylum VFX.

Walden Still Committed to Narnia Despite Disney Bail

Walden Media, reports VARIETY columnist Tatiana Siegel, is still committed to the Narnia franchise, despite Disney bailing on a third film.

Disney decided to quit the franchise after crunching the numbers: PRINCE CASPIAN took in slightly more than half of THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE's gross. But sources say that Disney and Walden disagreed on the release date for PRINCE CASPIAN from the start. Disney released the film in May, when Walden wanted a holiday-season berth and was looking to avoid a similar scenario for the next film, THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.

Female Lead for Sorcerer's Apprentice Set

Australian actress Teresa Palmer is set to play the female lead in Disney's THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE opposite Nicolas Cage's sorcerer and Jay Baruchel's apprentice, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

The live-action feature borrows from the Mickey Mouse portion of FANTASIA, featuring an apprentice who is left to clean the magic workshop by the sorcerer. Turning to magic to get the chores done, the apprentice gets a broom to clean, but loses control when the broom develops a mind of its own. Palmer will play Baruchel's love interest.
