Peru's Alpamayo Ent.’s Sets Sail on First 3D Feature

Peru's Alpamayo Ent. has launched the countrys first 3D feature titled PIRATAS EN EL CALLAO (PIRATES IN CALLAO), reports VARIETY. The film will be adapted from Hernan Garrido Leccas book of the same name, which chronicles the adventures of a young boy who time-travels to the 17th century to fight pirates off the coast of Peru. Eduardo Schuldt directed the film.

The picture opened Feb. 24, 2005, at 34 theaters in Lima, and another six in La Paz, Bolivia. After the first Peru/Bolivia run, the film will open in Central America and Argentina in April and the rest of the region by June. Outside of Peru the film will be titled PIRATES OF THE PACIFIC.

In addition, Alpamayo has signed a deal with China's Shanghai Animation to translate the film into Mandarin for 2006. As well, Alpamayo has signed deals to make PIRATES-themed T-shirts, clothing and lunchboxes as well as marketing deals with a fast-food chain and snack company.

"This movie has created a great deal of excitement throughout the industry. A Peruvian film has never received so much attention," says Schuldt.

Schuldt, along with 15 animators, made the 75-minute film in 18 months for $500,000.

Alpamayo began production on a second 3D film, which is based on another book by Lecca.
