Nintendo Developing ‘Legend of Zelda’ Live-Action Film

‘Maze Runner’ trilogy helmer Wes Ball is set to direct the project, with representative director and Fellow of Nintendo Shigeru Miyamoto producing alongside Avi Arad for Arad Productions.

Hide your pottery! Nintendo is set to develop a live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. Wes Ball (Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) will direct while Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo, will produce alongside Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Spider-Verse franchises) for Arad Productions Inc.

Miyamoto took to X to announce the project, stating, “This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega-hit films.”

He continued, “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

Plot and casting details have not been revealed, but the franchise’s many video game installments should provide ample theatrical material. At its core, the project will most likely follow the protagonist Link, an elfish warrior on a perpetual mission to rescue the princess of Hyrule, Zelda.

The film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., with the game company picking up more than 50% of the tab. Sony will handle theatrical distribution.

It was rumored earlier this year that Illumination may have been developing an animated Zelda film, but no word yet on whether that project could still be happening.
