The San Luis Obispo Festival and its George Sidney Independent Film Competition showcases art in independent filmmaking. The competition features categories for features, documentaries, animation and shorts (films less than 60 minutes). An award of US$500 is given in each category for first place, and second and third place winners receive an award of merit.
The CMJ FilmFest coincides with the CMJ Music Marathon and MusicFest and highlights the synergy between the moving image and music. The film festival showcases independent films that creatively and effectively use music in film. Awards are given to best feature or documentary, best short and best use of music in film. The event is sponsored and organized by the ChangeMusic Network.

ASIFA San Francisco will be hosting a night of new animation and special effects. ILM's Victoria Livingston will show a company reel of features and commercials, plus her own personal film. PDI will present a reel of commercial work and personal projects by staff members. DotComix will show several of their Web shows and a short on how they do performance animation. Wild Brain will screen about 30 minutes of new material including pilots, Webisodes, TV commercials and more. The event is a free screening at the Exploratorium and the general public is invited.
Objectif Image Saint Gely presents the 15th annual Saint Gely Short Film Festival. The festival's categories are documentary, fictional-dramatic, animation and experimental. Past festival chairmen have been Jean Pierre Mocky in 1998 and Claude Pinoteau in 1999.
The I Catelli Animati Festival highlights animation in all its forms from commercials to features films. The international competition features the following prizes: grand prize "I Castelli Animati," special jury prize, best debut short film, best European short film, audience prize, the Fabrizio Bellocchino prize and best non-narrative short film. The Italian competition will give a grand prize and special jury prize to the top Italian productions. New to this year's event is the International competition for animated Web sites.
The National Film Board of Canada is holding an open house of their new facilities. The event gives the public a chance to meet the filmmakers and staff. The NFB will feature screenings, studio tours and receptions on Monday from 2-6 pm and on Tuesday from 10 am - 5 pm. Screening facilities will be available for visitors to screen their own work as well.
The 5th International Festival of New Film celebrates new, creative, innovative, personal, radical, subversive work in film, video and new media. All works must have been completed after January 1, 1999. Entries must be sent on VHS tape or CD-Rom. An Art Film Market will take place during the Festival, concentrating on the growing South European Market area.

The Crested Butte Reel Festival is a competitive short film festival with an animation, experimental and student category. The shorts must be under 40 minutes. There are cash awards, unusual "trophies" and industry exposure. The festival also presents filmmakers' panels and a director's workshop. Entry fees: regular entries, $30; student entries $20.

The Indiana Film and Video Festival celebrates independent film and video from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio. Sponsored by the Indiana Film Society, the event is set up to encourage Midwest artists to create original films and videos. Winners are selected by the festival jury and share in cash prizes. The chosen films are screened at the festival and an audience prize and best of show award are given out on the night of the event. Winners have the chance to have their films aired on the TV series REEL TIME.
DancesWithFilms is a competitive event featuring a line-up of more than a dozen full-length narrative films and sixteen narrative shorts. DWF's mission is to open a venue for new and upcoming filmmakers to present their work without the fear of politics overshadowing their screen time. The criteria for entries are: 1. Is the person attached able to raise financing (even small sums) at any point based solely on the "name"? 2. Is the person attached able to open doors that might otherwise stay closed?
The 14th World Festival of Animated Films - Zagreb 2000 is an ASIFA sanctioned event dedicated to the art of animation. Categories are: work from 30 sec. to 6 min. long; work from 6 min. - 15 min. long; work 15min. to 30 min. long, and artists film debuts. Submissions can be sent on VHS tapes, but for screening a film print or a BETACAM SP PAL tape must be provided. Award with cash prizes will be given as follows: grand prize, a first prize in each time oriented catagories, and best first production.
Early deadline for entries: December 17, 1999.
The festival will have the following categories/programs: Computer Animation, International, Visions Canada, Children's Cinema and Midnight's Mania. Films must have been completed after June 1998, and not exceed 40 minutes. Films will be selected based on quality and originality. The New York Animation Festival, in collaboration with Video Lounge, presents Outer Limits, an international series of short animation, experimental, narrative and documentary film and video. Outer Limits will present a vast array of independent and innovative work from more than a dozen countries. An international program featuring animated films by Amy Kravitz (ROOST AND THE TRAP), Dana Behrman (PIGLATIN), Avi Katz (LAST WALTZ IN NEW YORK) and Sylvie Bringas and Orly Yadim (SILENCE) will be held on May 16 at 7:30 pm and May 18 at 9:30 pm.
This Festival has six categories: features, shorts, TV fiction, cartoons, shorts and documentaries. One panel of judges will be composed of show business and communications professionals and the other by Internet users.
