new forum for classical hand drawn animation

Hi to all,
With the final passing away of the last of the Nine Old Men I thought it appropriate that a forum be created that specialized in them, their animation, the films they created and the Golden Age of hand drawn animation.
These films are so fantastic, so important to the lives of so many people around the world that somehow I feel that we think one day someone will step up, like some kind of reincarnation of Walt Disney himself and start making those kind of films over again, so impossible it is to fathom that their magic will never be repeated.
Unfortunately as each day passes it is more and more apparent that this will never happen. No one is capable of putting together such a talented group of artists and insist on their perfection as Walt did at any cost.
Because of this and so many more reasons those classic films such as Snow White, Bambi, Fantasia, Pinocchio will never be equaled and so, the best we can do is to watch them, study them, talk about them in the hopes that some tiny bits of their magic will somehow permeate our own creations.
I invite you all to join us at this forum: http://classicalhanddrawnanimation.freeforums.org and hopefully this way we can show our appreciation of the films and the artists that inspired us to take the professional courses our lives have taken and maybe learn a few things along the way.
May we never take them for granted nor they be forgotten.

best regards to all,
chdoyle

I think that's a terribly presumptive thing to say.
There's a considerable number of VERY talented animators working in the biz these days, many of who are the literal artistic equals of the "nine old men".
Saying.....or suggesting, that thelevel of skill of the Nine Old Men cannot be attained or surpassed today says you probably need to investigate these modern talents further.

you are right

Well I wasn't referring so particularly to the animators or animation itself rather the final product.
As an animator I am well aware of the incredible, at the very least the technical quality, of the so many great hand drawn animators out there.
I was referring to whole team needed. Storymen, designers, directors, and above all that one person guiding the ship as Walt did with this attitude of, and I quote "I have a theory, that if it is good enough the public will pay you back for it".
And that goes without saying his uncanny ability of creating sincere, touching, identifiable, unpretencious and entertaining animated films. Something that has been missing in our modern age of hand drawn animated movies.

I'm sorry, as I do not mean to be contentious here, but I very much disagree.

All of those qualities are very much present in modern hand drawn animated films. I would defy anyone to say that films like Iron Giant, Little Mermaid, the Lion King amongst other are missing those qualities.
The times have changed, but the craft of animation and animation storytelling is just as rich, and vibrant as it has ever been.

If hand drawn animation had been as rich and vibrant as you say then why has it all but disappeared as of late? If Pinocchio's and Fantasia's and Bambi's were stll being made hand drawn animation would be alive and well but unfortunately it is not.

Hi chdoyle,

I wish you all the best with the forum and I think a lot of people will get something out of it so I'm going to sign up.

I got the Disney Treasures Silly Simphonies for Christmas and intend to study Disney's "Three Little Wolves" with the aid of Hans Perk's fantastic blog (http://afilmla.blogspot.com). Are you going to create a place to post about this in the Shorts section of the forum?

Cheers,
Claire.
