Character Walk

Taking an Intermediate 2D class that is focusing on getting your animation timing down on paper and then using Flash to clean it up.

Here is the rough walk cycle. His upper body jerks around way to much but I'm really only concerned with the lower body for this type of walk: (Requires Newest Flash Player to watch) Crazy Walk Not sure how to get it to loop, but I will look into it.

I'll post back on this thread when I clean it up in Flash.

And here is what the character will look like when finished-

Aw, I see now. Your character is walking a line literally. It is like he is walking a tight rope. I think the motion, so far, is ok. Once you get into producing your inbetweens, the walk should be perfect. That is my opinion.

...Once you get into producing your inbetweens...

That's kind of scarey because that's it with tweens there. It's a walk on 14's (Every 14 frames is a step). The Up frame is on 7 and the passing position is on 9. I guess I should ask, are the leg movements (which is what I'm concerned with at the moment) not flowing?

If he's just going to be walking with his legs and none - little upperbody movement, you need to calm the upper body down more. It's jittering around an back and forth too much. If you want a good example of this, watch the Daffy Duck short where he's the cowboy. I don't know the title, but I'm sure someone here does. In that short, his legs are moving with these big motions, great use of timing too, and his upper body remains completely still except for moving forward.

I think this walk would benifit from more time between steps. They're big wide bowlegged steps he's taking, and it's going a bit fast for my taste. Maybe add another seven frames to each step, and play with the timing more. Slower at the start of the step, then faster when the leg comes down and settle, then same for the other leg. The drawings look good, just play around and push the timing more.

It might be a problem on my end, but the link doesn't seem to load.

I used Flash 8 to mount the animation, so you might need to get the latest player in order to view it. You can get it here

Agreed

Yeah, the upper bottom movement didn't come off at all. But I was more concerned with his bottom half on this one that I just kinda of slapped those down.

I will be coloring this in Flash so I'll be able to play with that stuff some more once I get it all done.

Thanks for the input!

See if you can save it to loop, that it might be easier to evaluate.

I am not sure but I think your feet are crossing over each other. Given that you got your self a cowpoke I am thinking that you wont this action. The character did not run smoothly, but that might be because I am on dialup. I will check it out at a cyber cafe to make sure I am seening it correctly.

i suggest exporting it as an animated gif. easy to loop.

Fixed

Alright, I have two versions here. The second I added a black line on the belt line because I felt it was hard to read the walk as his legs actually changing positions. But, then again the black line might also make it hard to see what is going on. So, hope one or the other makes since :)

Original

Belt Line

It feels as if the upper part of the body isn't doing as much movement as the legs are generating, meaning, you should add the head swaying back and forth in perspective to match the movement of the legs/feet.

Looking good though, keep going!

P.s. Tell your instructor that I hate it when people only use flash as a coloring program! There is so much more to it! Arghhhhhhh

The lack of upper body movement is actually on purpose. Trying to get this feeling that he totally walks with his butt. Guess I didn't sell it :(

As for my instructor, I'm just glad he changed the program from what they did last quarter. Apparently they did everything in Flash and shot on 1's for 12 frames per second. I was not happy when I heard that. I'm glad he's changed it to where we test our timing first on paper and then shoot on 2's for 24 frames per second.

Here it is finished and done. It looks like its playing slower than how I made it. Which I'm sure it true. But I think its a successful walk.
