Serkis to Provide Performance Capture for Another Ape

Andy Serkis, who has made of career out of performance-capture roles in LORD OF THE RINGS and KING KONG, has taken the lead ape role in RISE OF THE APES, reports VARIETY.

Andy Serkis, who has made of career out of performance-capture roles in LORD OF THE RINGS and KING KONG, has taken the lead ape role in RISE OF THE APES, reports VARIETY. Serkis plays Caesar, a chimpanzee that is given superior intelligence through genetic engineering by a scientist, played by James Franco. The cast also includes Freida Pinto and John Lithgow.

The PLANET OF THE APES prequel is being produced by 20th Century Fox's and Chernin Entertainment. Rupert Wyatt is the director. Weta Digital is handling the photoreal ape effects.

Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa penned the script and will produce. The film is set in modern day San Fran where following the genetic experiments Caesar leads an ape uprising against humans.

Chernin Entertainment's Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark are also producers.

Fox has set June 24, 2011 for the film's release.
