Friday the 13th Slays the Competition

Performing far better than expected, FRIDAY THE 13TH remake earned $43.6 million in its opening four-day weekend, taking advantage of the Friday, Feb. 13 opening date, Valentine's Day on Saturday and the President's Day holiday on Monday. The New Line/Warner Bros. horror flick has vfx from Asylum FX and had a whopping per-screen average of $13,605.

Last week's winner, romantic comedy HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU placed second with $22.3M for New Line/Warner Bros., with a total haul of $55.8M.

Surprise hit TAKEN (Fox), starring Liam Neeson, came in third with another $21.8M and in three weeks has earned $80.5M.

Stop-motion CORALINE (Focus Features, animation from Laika) made $18.9M in its second week out, good enough for fourth place, with a total gross of $39.1M.

Shopping comedy CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC (Buena Vista) opened in fifth place with $17.8M.

Placing sixth was comedy PAUL BLART: MALL COP (Sony) with $13.6M and $112.4M in five weeks. THE PINK PANTHER 2, also from Sony, came in seventh place with $10.8M and in two weeks has made $24.1M.

Sony's thriller THE INTERNATIONAL (vfx from Universal Production Partners) opened low in eighth place with $10.7M.

While winning practically every award in sight, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (Fox Searchlight) made another $8.7M in the last weekend before the Oscars, placing ninth, and has a 14-week cume of $88.1M.

Actioner PUSH (Summit, vfx from Peerless Camera Company and Digiscope) rounded out the top 10 with $8M and a two-week take of $20.4M.

In animated features, THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX earned $243,525 in its ninth week for Universal, with a total gross of $50.5M. MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA (Paramount/DreamWorks Animation) made another $198,388 in its 15th week out for a total gross of $179.9M. Oscar-nominated WALTZ WITH BASHIR (Sony Pictures Classics) made another $142,290 and in eight weeks has earned $1.4M.
