Proof’s Ron Frankel to Talk Previs at FMX, Academy Events

Proof Inc. founder and creative director Ron Frankel is scheduled to speak on the role of Previs in filmmaking at three upcoming industry events, including the “Virtual Production” track at FMX, the inaugural edition of the Production Pipeline Expo, and the Academy’s “Pre and Post Visualization – Today’s Storyboarding” Craft Series panel.

Los Angeles, CA --

Ron Frankel, founder and creative director of pre-visualization house Proof Inc. is slated to participate in three high-profile industry events in the coming weeks. Frankel is participating in these events to promote the critically important role of Previs within the filmmaking industry.

A pioneer in the field of feature film pre-visualization, Frankel was the first to introduce directors such as Steven Spielberg, David Fincher and Darren Aronofsky to the use of Previs and has been a driving force behind the integration of Previs throughout the entire film production process. Recent collaborators include those with Marc Webb, Justin Lin, Zack Snyder, Francis Lawrence, Gary Ross and Michel Gondry.

“In today’s world of feature film production, the stakes are higher, the margin for error is thinner, the budgets are tighter, and the schedules are shorter,” Frankel says. “In this environment, we’re forced to devise smarter, faster and more versatile ways of working. At the center of these changes is Previs – a discipline that started in the modest roots of shot design and technical planning, but has evolved and thrived. Today, Previs encompasses almost every aspect of film-making."

Frankel will speak on a panel entitled “Pre and Post Visualization – Today’s Storyboarding,” as part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Craft Series. The panel will take place on Monday, April 15, at the AMPAS offices in Beverly Hills, and will focus on the development of pre-visualization on the computer through animation. The session will also explore how Previs has helped to further communication between members of production, and to improve both the understanding of the story and processes taken in developing the director's vision.

Panelists in addition to Frankel for the April 15 event include Sheena Duggal (The Hunger Games, Spider Man 3), Chris Edwards (Thor, Iron Man 2),Dan Gregoire Prometheus, Snow White and the Huntsman),Joe Kosinski (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy), and Boyd Shermis (Journey2: The Mysterious Island, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) with moderator Michael Tronick (Governor, Film Editing Branch).

On April 25th, Frankel will present a discussion on Previs during the “Virtual Production” Track, at the FMX 2013 event in Stuttgart, Germany. FMX is an annual, international conference on Animation, Visual Effects, Games and Transmedia. FMX is an event by Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg, organized by the Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction, hosting the Animation Production Day (APD), a joint venture with the Festival of Animated Film Stuttgart (ITFS). FMX is held in cooperation with the VES Visual Effects Society, ACM SIGGRAPH, 5D Institute, and Eurographics.

And on Friday, May 3rd at 11:00 AM, Frankel will present a discussion on Previs during the inaugural Production Pipeline Expo 2013 in Santa Monica. This event is the new home to the solutions that will inspire today’s artist, discover tomorrow’s new leaders, and spark the ideas that will drive “the next big thing” in the collective creative industries of VFX, Animation and Game Development. What began as the Career Fair & Technology Expos of 2011 and 2012 has evolved into this new visual effects and animation expo complete with expert panels. Production Pipeline Expo 2013 will address the creation, development, management, and delivery of content across film, television, and games along all the disciplines of an actual production pipeline with special attention paid to all major portions of the creation process.
