I was doing this rollover thing for a client and thought, "this would be pretty wild looking with some vivid colors." (it started as very subdued, corporate colors):

Just roll your mouse around. Kind of reminds me of Timothy Leary's "How to Operate Your Brain." (if you haven't seen that, it's worth a look.) It isn't animation exactly but a good zone out.
If you click (hold) and move the mouse, you can move the pointer without affecting any squares. That way you can "draw" things in different spots on the screen. (I need to make it work the other way around but the rollover while mouse is up was easier.)
Control+alt+t brings up a reset button.
