what's the difference

This is a subject i've been pondering for a while. I don't understand the differenciations(sp?) people like to make between eastern and western 2d animation. Besides culture, is there really that much of a difference. I mean, 2d animation is 2d animation, no matter where it comes from.
And if american shows, like batman the animated series, for example get outsourced to a eastern animation studio, does that make it truely "western"?

Another thing I don't get is people that get offended when I call an anime a cartoon. In my book, no matter how sophisticated the storyline is, if it's hand drawn and celshaded and heavily stylized and follows the 12 principles, then it's a cartoon.

I guess the point of this post is: is it really necessary to break the medium of 2d animation into subcategories like that? I mean, does it really matter?

In answer to your question, before this gets locked or ignored.

Difference is healthy. Division is not.

To me terms like 'anime' are really for the animation geeks. The layperson on the street doens't know the difference. Most don't even know the difference between traditional animation and 3D. To the vast majority, in America at least, if it's animated, it's a cartoon. If it's animated it's from Disney. Most people don't care. And the people that do care, are fanatics and you won't really change their mind. Interesting question about american animation being animated in asia. It's like the same question, is your German VW Jetta really german because it's built in Mexico? Or that your Saturn is built mostly in Europe and Asia and only assembled in the US? It's getting more and more rare that things are actually created in one country, or even in their country of origin. But who cares, if you like anime, good. If you don't, good. It's our differences that make us interesting. If we all liked the same things, what a borring world this would be.
