My place in the world of animation?

Hey guys, im 17, the real name is Scott Ross, for the last 2 - 3 years ive played abotu with animation and its fantastic! I have a severe lack of drawing skill, so all my animations are moslt plasticine / figure movies! :) ( apart from the odd stick man animation, we've all been there though  ) i was just wondering where to go now? I live in scotland, ive never taken computing or art throught my whole school career and this is my last year at school i applied to college to do computing and applied to 5 uni's to do history! and its decsion time!! or is it possible to do both history and animation? i really wann get some of my stuff out there! most of it is shockling dissapointing but i beleive it has real potential with some training! i was judst wondering where do i fit into the world of animation?

Rozzco! hopeing to make my new home this fourm!

hee hee :) ok lol this work was actually done today i dont it pretty quickly :D took me about 2- 3 hours! lol u can tell i kinda rushed it cause it aint too good :) hope u enjoy! its too small to see the speech bubbles but the first one says - " You have been a burden too long, This is MY TABLE" and the second says " Earth Replication " :) . . . http://media.putfile.com/muck-about

thank you! yea! i must ask have you worked with plasticine before?and "handy hints" as u move poistion they always come out of shape so on through wear and tear of ure fingers patting them?

Why not try getting an internship at Aardman?
If that doesn't work out, either go to an animation school or learn it on your own.

Nice going, keep up animating. You will start to get the feel for timing, where to stretch the timing and where to cut it back.

ive got another good movie lasting about 1 min - 2 mins but i cant find any where to upload 2mmb + file. . . any suggestions and ill show some more of my work?

harvey human- Cheers man im gonna look into it!

Wontobe- Cheers man!

also any one reaad "cracking animation" ? it truely is cracking!

L Finston- Cheers man uve being a big help, but creating several replica's will take alot of plasticine

My good friends

Um.... it does sound a little like bragging, and forgive me if it's true, but a little hard to believe it all, too.

Hey, I am not lying, everything I say I mean it with deep serenity, I did do all this and NO! I did not raise myself :D
Through time you will learn my identity and to be honest.......you guys are hiding something :p
Tell me your secrets ;)

My name is Elmer Fudd. I own a mansion and a yacht.

Ain't the internet grand! You can say anything, be anyone, until something you say screws things up, or the people you are communicating with are smarter than you are yourself.

Pat Hacker, Visit Scooter's World.

I did do all this and NO! I did not raise myself :D

Then I think your parents deserve SOME credit for your financial independence. I don't think you started this invisible empire straight from a garbage dumpster outside the hospital =)

harvey human- Cheers man im gonna look into it!

I want you to phone Aardman tomorrow morning. (Don't say "gonna" on the phone with Aardman.)

If I don't hear a progress report from you tomorrow afternoon, I will be extremely disappointed.

em . . . phone and say what exactly ? can't be first thing ive got school haha :) im on my last year. . .

After checking your web site with "who is" I'd say you are a wanta be 17 year old anywhere in the world (and after reading your posts...English isn't your first language) with big dreams and stories. You'd stand more of a chance if you came clean and just made your animations and shared them. Not many big timers that host their sites with "GoDaddy".

I cannot believe you all think that I made up the claims about myself, it is absolutely absurd that you think I am false.
Do not think that I am not who I say I am, it is not in my best interest to lie to you, especially at this point in my life, I am who I say I am and if I wasn't, then why would I claim to be something I'm not.
Please believe my sincerity, for the only reason I did this, is because I trust you all, safety is first, and besides, it's not like if someone is going to arrange to meet with me, kidnapp me and hold me for ransome or sell me on the black market. :)
P.s how dare you claim I cannot speak standard english, I got a distinction in English and Literature in my final exams, so do not be rude.
you have my best regards.

If you're unsure, don't bother.
You have to want it.

LoL Dark Angel dude i wasnt implying you i was saying it to all the other guys that said " oh ill come out then and im a secret agent" so on yea know? lol and + even if you do say who u are is not as if im gonna be that bothered to fly to where ever you are from scotland and beat you up :) lol

Ah, but the worst that he'll hear is "no." Who knows what may happen? Maybe they'll tell him what they're looking for, set up a tour, tell him to look at the website, or just tell him to have a nice day. Maybe they'll even offer a job sweeping floors and getting coffee (a great way to start at his age, btw). Who knows?

But one thing's absolutely certain, if he doesn't call he's no better off than if they had said "no."

That's just it your english is too good. You deserved that distinction. Those are the type of things you should brag about.

Like....way too good...for a Beverly Hills Zip code.

No, I wasn't implying anything against you :) it was some of the other members who made "out of timin statements" Hey that's why I lov'em so much.
You and I have one thing in common, our age, apart from this you are trying to discover your true purpose (sarcasm) at a young age, I admire that ;)

With all due respect to Harvey Human, I think it's a very bad idea to call an animation studio on the phone.

Finston is probably correct. You should just show up in person, instead.

you arent from scotland / england then :) sarcasm here is described as a hurtfull irony, it is hurtfull for the fact say some one just got a hair cut and you say . "oh . . . . nice hair cut" this is sarcasm cause you don't beleive the haircut is nice and intend to hurt! :)

Well....

That's just it your english is too good. You deserved that distinction. Those are the type of things you should brag about.

Well thank you...I guess  . But do not be delusional :) I do not brag, I simply tell it like it is, for you see, there are many respectable and intelligent members here, such as...Skinnylizard, Harvey Human :) Damage, DsB, Animated Ape, Kdg14 (sorry I can't remember it) and myself, I can relate to them and respect them tremendously, of course, I adapt my form of speaking to suit. But hey...thanks :)

Most of us here on this board try to update our profiles so it shows where we actually are some of you new guys are still trying to slink by with euphemisms . Maybe you have something to hide, maybe not, but why not at least let us know what time zone you are in.

I don't understand.....if you're using slang.....I just don't get it, but I am not patronizing you, if that's what you're trying to say, I consider you one of us  so no pun intended :)

Well add it in your cp panel under location, so we all can tell when we are up late at night.

For DDD, why the Beverly Hills Zip in your registration for your site, why not be honest about it? They don't write or talk like you down there. I know I am a California native. Born and raised here, except when my Dad was transferred for a year or two while he was in the Navy.

Good point. People in the animation industry are usually a friendly bunch. At the very least you give them a face to put with that go-get 'em attitude. Enthusiasm is appreciated in 'da biz.

I think that's the thing. To come across as legitimate is really helps to have an internet identity that people can easily find and see where you're coming from. Most of the people posting on this forum are established personalities with a history that you can check out, maybe to see why they made a particular comment or reacted to something posted online.

I'm a big believer in accountability, especially in the faceless void of the internet. If I make a spurious comment or am rude to someone, then chances are it's going to come back to me through the information I had made available to all. It's a good way to keep things real, y'know?

Back to topic - Rozzco, Aards really isn't like any of the big US companies, so approaching them for advice is certainly a viable option if that's what you want to do. The company is still pretty small given their success, and that certainly helps things. My friend started at the company as a trainee model maker and was there eventually for 9 years as a (Senior) Animator. It can happen, you just have to give it a go.

Hope this helps,
K

Actually, I have heard something worse myself, but from a different animation studio.

I have trouble imagining what they could legally do that's worse than just saying no. But I have worked at a place that made fun of people's reels after they left, keeping a reel of their own that they laughed at when they got bored. It's been my experience that a place that's willing to treat potential employees so poorly isn't someplace one would want to work anyway. The places I had the most respect for and enjoyed working at the most treated each applicant respectfully, both to their face and after they left. It's not in a studio's best interest to treat any potential hire poorly.

Lately it seems everyone thinks I am lying about who I am, I understand that this is rampant throughout the internet, but I should have thread cautiously before listing who I am, I thought everyone would have just said, "Hmm, that's interesting."
I guess I'm gonna have to win back their trust, I doesn't matter I still respect them.

Hey,

I wasn't accusing anyone specifically, but you can certainly take my last post as a suggestion as to how to give your posts some context, if you wish. AWN is a very supportive environment, and everyone here would jump at the chance to congratulate your success - they just need the incentive.

Kevan

Wow kevan have you helped do they movies? completley

Every company needs a token Welshman.

: )

(Btw, I would suggest going to Uni to study animation, for it will give you a good grounding and open up a lot of opportunities for you).

They did return my photos, but didn't pay the postage.
I could have refused to accept the package, but I wanted my photos back, so I just paid for it. It was much more than if I had reimbursed them for the postage, which I had been willing to do.

I did eventually learn that this wasn't a good way of applying for jobs and switched over to sending CDs, and then to using an on-line portfolio.

My experiences with most other studios have been pretty good, considering they've been rejections.

I agree. Today's applicant may be tomorrow's customer, client, or boss. This is a fairly prominent German studio. In business, one should never say never, but I avoid watching programs or buying videos by this studio, and I would think three times before doing business with them.

Laurence

Ugh. That's horrible. US studios are very clear in telling you (or should be if they aren't) that you shouldn't send originals as they will definitely not send them back.

I'm always amazed when companies don't get the idea of customer service or even just acting like decent human beings. It takes absolutely no effort to be polite, and the results are astounding. A polite no and even some advice if they have time, may mean the difference of you sending them work in the future from some place else, or making sure that they never work with you again.

WoW im amazed! AMAZED! lol! how doid u get to whhere you are today? but dont u need good art skills ? :(

just as a sidenote, i recieve a lot of applications for jobs and sometimes people dont pay attention to the brief (i.e. locals only or no 3d people please) and still send resumes.
ive made it a point to make sure me or someone else does reply and never says anything negative. Even people overseas i reply to saying why i cant accept their resume reply back saying that they appreciate my taking the time to give them a reply.

i think rude people should be eaten.

Yes, it certainly helps a lot, and like any creative discipline being able to visualise is the most important thing. I'm not a particularly fine draughtsman, but I can externalise my ideas, and that's what counts.

(I posted that link to reinforce my previous point about accountability rather than turn the thread towards me, so apologies to everyone else reading this).

They'll probaly leave a really bad taste in your mouth!

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Kudos to you Skinny. I can't tell you how many small companies I've sent my resume and reel to and didn't hear a single response. Did they get it? Do I not fit somehow? Fine, tell me why, or at least let me know that they got the material. And a number of them were even advertising for the spot I was trying to fill (and I had the experience to do it). It didn't make me want to follow up with them at all.

Even Pixar is nice enough to send you an e-mail saying they received your application and they receive hundreds of applications a week! You may not hear back from them again but at least you know you made contact.

I'm not asking for a post card. Just a quick e-mail (virtually free minus the time) to say they received the goods, thanks for the interest. Many companies do, those who don't are foolish to be shooting themselves in the foot by alienating potential hires (and possibly potential clients or competition), ESPECIALLY if they've requested resumes and reels and an applicant went through the time and spent the money to ship something to them.
